Tonneau covers/gas mileage.

Do the covers help any?

Tonneau covers/gas mileage.

Postby 99CivicSiR [OP] » May 22 2012, 4:22pm

Just wondering if a tonneau cover would help with better gas mileage with my truck?

Truck is 2005 GMC Sierra 1500, ext cab, 4x4, Z71, 5.3 L, everything is stock.

I signed up to fuelly.com to start documenting my fillups/mileage, and was shocked at the first total for 13.X mpg, or 17.X L/100km. I live in a small town and the main driving i do is on country roads at 80km/hr, and through town, 50 km/hr and a few stop signs. No real highway driving for any long amounts, just the occasional 25km drive to the next town.
Now i drive this like an old man, doing the speed limit, not coming on to it, actually trying to get gas mileage, because i'm used to the fuel economy of a 4 door standard 1999 Civic.

Now i watched the Mythbusters episode where they tested the theory that you are supposed to get better mileage with the tailgate down, but they proved that was incorrect.

I'm wondering if a tonneau cover would help some, or if it wouldn't be noticable enough to warrant buying one just for the purpose of better gas mileage, or is a programmer with a "fuel mileage" tune my other best option?

Any input is appreciated, Thanks.

Tonneau covers/gas mileage.

Postby Machster69 » May 22 2012, 4:43pm

Im on tapatalk or ide go find the thread for this for you... Its already been discussed. And since i dont have a cover, i didnt pay it much attention as to the results. Ide imagine the cover does very little to increase/decrease mpgs! And i definately would say no to buying one for the main purpose of mpgs!

A tune is your cheapest option, and odds are it will improve your mpgs! But not promised of course...

Ive got basically the same truck, mine is an '03 though.

I have a tonneau, but have taken it off to mount my toolbox, ive noticed no change in mileage with the cover on or off. They are handy though and if it wernt for the toolbox would still be on my truck.

Im like you where most of my driving is around 80k and 50k in town watching how i take off and such.

I have an Airaid intake, MBRP exhaust, and superchip(87 tune ) in my truck I consistently get 19-20 MPG driving in almost the same conditions as you. ( Just filled up thismorning and got 19.89MPG )

The superchip made a big difference ( 16-17mpg without 19-20mpg with city driving )

Hope this helps

Just took mine off a few days ago and did a manual calculation. No change for me on a 2010 with the 5.3. This is of course one fill-up but I don't anticipate any difference in the long run. Going to run without the cover for the summer, wrap it up to keep snow out in the winter.

Just like Damion says,,, I have 2005 crew cab 4x4 slt and just put a flat bakflip cover on it and saw no increase in mileage. Best help was a tuner and cold air intake. It's a truck and they don't make them to get great mileage. Just my $.02 . Never will be even close to Honda!

Yeah...I knew the mileage was going to shock me coming from a Honda.
All the old farts at work were the ones telling me a box cover would help a lot but I couldnt see it making that big of a difference.
I've been looking into the bully dog gt tuner but maybe I will have to research it some more and some other tuners/programmers.

Best of luck. Tuners will help most and then adding an cold air intake and even exhaust all combined will be the best as possible but I will repeat myself, It's a truck and will not ever get great mileage but you can help it achieve as good as it will get by these addons.

I wouldnt get the bullydog, a friend of mine had one and returned it for a superchp. It was very slow, didnt have the features of the SC and cost more. Plus with the SC you dont always have to have it plugged in, and have another thing hanging off your dash. Just my .02 though.

Superchip and Diablosport seem to be the most used / preffered tuners. Ive had no issues with my superchip at all. Wouldnt be without it.
