2004 Silverado Catalytic Converter Problems??

Postby OSUcowboys81 [OP] » Nov 10 2011, 1:43am

So I just bought an 04 Silverado 1500 Extended Cab and only 6 days later the check engine light came on so I took it to the dealer and they said the catalytic converter is restricted. Is there any particular reason for this? And how much is this going to cost me to replace/fix? Or is there a better option?

Most common problem that ive seen ruin cats is un burned fuel, check and see how long its been since the plugs wires and coils have been changed, also knowing your mileage/ engine might get more answers

I would go with an aftermarket high flow cat, when mine goes(if ever) I will be doing an entire exhaust setup. Just search for them on here and you should be able to find some prices and ideas. Did you buy it from a dealer? if so make them pay for it! I would have the pay the cost of an oem replacement and then pay the differance to upgrade to a high flow cat if I were you, just make sure you have it running properly before putting a new cat on.

I'm definitely making them replace it! I like your idea though to get a high flow cat. And definitely no misfires. It runs beautifully except for the restricted cat. ive only gone 200 miles on it

Well..if its running good then I would just do like I said with replacing the cat, I dont really know what else would cause it besides bad plugs or something along that line and you would certainly be able to feel if it wasnt running smooth or smelled of un burnt fuel.

Nope nothing like that! I'll just have the dealer replace the cat and call it a day. Thanks man!

Catalytic converters dont usually commit suicide, they get murdered. I would strongly make sure that you do not have other problems before you put a new one on it.
