another exhaust question II

Postby WingNut [OP] » Nov 22 2011, 2:22pm

Can I get by on re-using my exhaust studs? While I was pulling the manifolds off last night on one of my vehicles half the studs backed out with the nuts on. I was able to remove the nuts and clean the threads. The studs look like they're in good condition. Further info: the studs go into an iron block.

Should I also pull out the remainin studs?

And should I coat the studs (or new studs) with any lock tight on assembly?

You could use them, but they are liable to break when going back together with it. The heat cycles they go through make them brittle. To prevent problems when going back together with it, I'd replace them all. When going back together with it, use anti-sieze compound on them. The last thing I would do it use a thread locker on them.

Thanks. The Bently manual I'm using isn't clear on what to use on installing manifold studs. The only thing it says is to use copper nuts and apply a "copper paste" on the threads for the nuts. I wasn't sure on wether anti-sieze or lock tite would be better. I'll go with anti-sieze.
