rdss - take it easy and don't read too deep into things. OP never said a thing about buying a cat back system after Boomerado's post. Also, while reading the thread in series, coming to Boom's post, I completely understood what he meant. Anyone in their right mind would know that replacing a stock muffler with an aftermarket performance muffler will change the sound, ESPECIALLY after reading 300+ posts in the exhaust forum!!!!

well OK then.. you guys back and forth was actually quite informative if yous didnt realize it. (not being sarcastic)
I think i will just get the muffler... Its taken me 5 weeks just to save a hundred bucks and blowing my savings on a nice catback would have ment a bum christmas morning for the little ones... Damm kids are expensive.
If at first you don't succeed... look in trash for instructions

You'll be quite happy. I simply swapped out my stock muffler for a Flowmaster, and she growls pretty nice now. What brand are you thinking of going with?

Correct me if im wrong here but with the cat back dont you lose the spare tire underneath? Thats why I went with my flowmaster delta 40 muffler instead of a cat back system anyway. I didnt want my spare taking up space in the bed, but like I said I could be wrong..

You're both right and wrong, at the same time :D! Some systems do force you to drop the spare tire, but some can let you keep it. I agree with you, though, that not having the spare is a pretty dumb idea.

I'm still not clear as to why anyone would do a catback other than to have the option as to where the exhaust dumps out? Am I right that I would gain nothing (mpg/hp) over just welding in a exhaust?

You might free up a few hp with a cat back system. The sound will almost be identical between just a muffler swap and a cat back, but like I said u might get a few extra hp's with a catback due to the bends in the piping. It doesn't seem like it would make much of a diffence but it does matter. The more air flow u free up the more hp's u gain. And most of the time (not always) the more hp's the better mpg's you get.

Agreed. Most stock systems on trucks are big enough to handle lots of exhaust gases; the usual choke points are the headers, cats, and muffler. I replaced the muffler on my truck with a Flowmaster, and just that alone gave the engine a little extra pep. The more flow, the more HP.
