Are Straight Pipes Legal?

Are Straight Pipes Legal?

Postby 03NebSilverado [OP] » May 04 2012, 12:20pm

Was thinking bout getting straight pipes for my 5.3. Have a bunch of friends that have this and have never got pulled over, im still not sure if theyre legal. Is it a secondary offense?

Depends on the laws in your state. Check with some local muffler shops. They might be able to help.

Individual state inspection laws will be in effect. Contact them. Here, a muffler shop will not remove a cat converter, this I believe is Federal law.

The thing to do is put dual high flow cats on it, then straight pipes. Then the only laws you'd break would be local noise ordinances.

I would put the cats on anyways....true straight pipes are actually quite painful to listen to, especially when header back pressure causes the gun-shot like pop. Sure it's great on a drag car, but I wouldn't want to scream along without something restraining the noise.

To answer your question though...I believe it varies as with jurisdiction, and then of course you have to take the 'friendliness' of the police into account.

I'd call the DOT in Nebraska and find out....I'd get pulled over in a second in Cleveland, even if it is legal with cats in Ohio (about 85% sure of this). The DOT will have rules based on emissions, so I'd think you'd be fine if you kept the cats. I don't see a plains state being too hard on noise level.
