Check engine light and rotten egg smell

Check engine light and rotten egg smell

Postby silverado253 [OP] » Aug 08 2013, 2:24pm

I have a rotten egg smell coming from the exhaust of my truck it's a 08 5.3 silverado. This morning I just had a check engine light come on. I'm assuming its a sensor but if it is the cat will I be able to run it hard and clear it out or is it toast or should I say are they toast. Also just got gas 60 miles ago could it be bad gas?

Have the code checked and go from there. How many miles on the truck? I doubt the cats would be going already, but anything is possible.

Federal Emissions warranty is 8 years 80,000 miles. If your cat/cats are failing it could be warrantied.

That's good to know how do I make a claim for that. Also I have a flow master muffler might void that

It all starts at the dealer. And the muffler 'could' void all that, dealer discretion, well actually they would have to prove the addition of the muffler caused the failure of the cat?!?!
You'll have to authorize a diagnostic fee at the dealer, could be $100 or so. Then they can tell you the deal, if it's not covered or has nothing to do with emissions then you're out the $100 but you'll know what is going on at that point.

It sounds to me that it is the cat and the code is probably an O2 sensor if it is becoming plugged. I would run it a little hard on your trip to see if the smell goes away and that might be your que to have the code reset and see if it comes back. I would guess that if it is an O2 sensor, it might be too late and the code will come back regardless of the condition of your cat. Just a guess so don't hold me to it. Good Luck!

I did remote start the truck this morning and it ran tell it shut it self off. Also I drive all city back roads to and from work. My latest fuel up was arco only because I had no other option. I'm hoping getting it out on the open road is gonna clear everything out

Check the code to see what it is, then clear it and see if it comes back during/after your road trip.
