Exhaust manifold Replacement

Exhaust manifold Replacement

Postby MLeBlanc [OP] » Mar 20 2012, 3:10am

Ok so my passenger side E.M needs replaced got a leak and it "tweets" when i "whomp" on the gas pedal. Part costs around 500-600 bucks? I guess this is going to be a 2 part question. 1st any ideas on maybe getting a new part for cheaper? and 2nd, How hard is it to replace? Looks pretty easy but not real sure. Need any special tools? etc. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Instead of manifolds, get a pair of shorty headers that bolt right up. Otherwise, try "partsgeek.com" and you should find the parts much cheaper. Shouldn't need any special tools just sockets, ratchet, wrenches, etc. however a impact wrench would be nice on the Y-pipe bolts. I just put shorties on my 6L... never going back to manifolds.

It is a fairly easy job. Are you sure the manifold is bad and it's not just the gasket? Here is a link to a little cheaper one: http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-674-728-Ex ... &carId=003

The only way to tell if the gasket or manold is bad is to pull it off and check the manifold with a straight edge.

That, or you can look and see where it is actually leaking. Most times a warped manifold can be tightened down enough to compress the gasket (new) and stop a leak.

This will work on a normal vehicle but I wouldn't dare try it on a truck that is prone to busting manifold bolts.

I didn't realize this was a common problem with these vehicles. I did notice that when I was looking for a better price for a manifold for him, all I could find was the passenger side. I take it that is the one that fails.

Both sides break off, I looked at a 2000 2500 HD 6.0 and there was 4 bolts broke off on each side, then I looked at a 2004 2500 HD 6.0 and it had 2 bolts broke off on each side.

I read this wrong the first time and didn't see the "bolts" at the end. I would always reccomend replacing the bolts when replacing a manifold or gasket. The heat is terrible to exhaust manifold bolts.
