Glass Pack vs. all other flow mufflers?

Glass Pack vs. all other flow mufflers?

Postby kwag [OP] » Jun 30 2011, 12:00pm

I had a 1998 Chevy with 350 and glass pack duel exhaust, I liked the sound. I now have a 2005 5.3 with stock exhaust and I am wanting to get back to that sound. I have been reading about the flow master and other types of mufflers, but what is the difference between those and the glass pack? What is wrong with glass packs?

THanks.

Glass packs are infamous with chevy trucks. Years ago it seems like thats all anyone put on them but I personally was never a fan of the throaty/crackly glass pack sound. I did alot of research on mufflers and what sounds best with the 5.3 and I finally ended up at the Flowmaster super 10 muffler. IT SOUNDS AWSOME! Probably the best sound ive ever heard from just a cat back style setup. Ive heard trucks with true duals that dont sound as good as my truck with just the muffler. But its all personal prefference i suppose.

Is there any performance issues related to one or the other?

I think all of the mufflers are free flowing enough, but I went with Magnaflow because of it's straight through design. I love the sound of Flowmaster as well and a 40 Series or a 14" or shorter Magnaflow will probably get you the sound you want if you are looking for a louder great sound exhaust.

Glass packs are louder as their length gets shorter, and as they get older. On my '94 I had 2 18" glass packs, but they were not loud enough, even over time. Yes, as time goes on, a set will get louder because the element inside (some type of fiberglass) get wore out. Of course, you can change the sound of a glass pack instantly if you heat them up, then stick a water hose up the tailpipe and flood the glass pack causing the material to crack. At this point. there is far less constriction and a better sound (IMO). My current truck has 2 8" glass packs with true exhausts, but like 'esther' said...they do crackle.

I think the restriction of a glass pack has to do with the internal tube and whether or not it is luvered or just a drilled piece of pipe. All the packing does is absorb sound. This is why I went with Magnaflow since it is a straight pipe with holes drilled in it and a muffler body around it holding the packing to lower sound. So, destroying the packing will make it louder but should not affect the restriction of the glass pack.

I like it, you wouldn't have one of the 5.3?
