Muffler Question.

Muffler Question.

Postby 04SilverRdBlk04SilverRdBlk is online! [OP] » Aug 31 2011, 3:12pm

I am going to be getting a new exhaust kit for my '04 1500 5.3L Crew Cab. Like all beginners I am still deciding which manufacturer to go with. Anyways! I was just curious, what to do if desired muffler rusts out? Am I able to just get it cut out and have the same muffler put in or can I buy a different model and get it installed or am I just stuck with the whole thing and have to buy a new kit?

New to this so don't beat me :?

So I take it that if a muffler goes back you'll have to get a whole new kit?

You can just swap out the stock muffler for a performance model, and that should generate enough flow and noise to satisfy most any truck owner. If you want max performance, you've got endless options, but swapping out the muffler is the easiest and most practical option.

I cannot tell you the last time I replaced a muffler. Not since exhaust systems went to stainless steel. Nonetheless, the key is to make sure they get hot enough to drive out any moisture in them. Lots of short trips are hard on a muffler, because the exhaust does not get hot enough to evaporate the moisture that gathers in the exhaust system. Make sure your truck gets out for a good long run, especially if you live in a cooler climate.
See, now you have a reason to take your truck for a long drive once in a while...it's maintenance! ;)

Most of the rusting I see around mufflers is on the pipes and/or clamps. But living in a salt-heavy environment, you could see rust sooner.
Getting an aftermarket muffler that replaces the stock muffler, as suggested, is the easiest solution. Or a SIDO or SISO kit is a good choice for muddler plus outlet piping.
