I'm pretty sure my catalytic converter was bad. (It was glowing red and making a clanging noise). My 98 Sierra 5.0l, was running really rough and almost shaking I guess you can say. I thought the new catalytic converter would have fixed this, but it didn't. Now I'm thinking it's an oxygen sensor that was damaged because of the bad catalytic converter. My truck has 3 oxygen sensors, 2 before and one after the catalytic converter. I'm assuming it would have damaged the one after, right?

Usually no. The post converter oxygen sensors have a pretty easy life.

get it scan for free at autozone or advance, and when replacing the o2 sensors double and triple check you are changing

the correct one; since they apear to be on oposite sides sometimes just follow the exhaust pipes. that scan will tell you

exactly if is the cat or the sensors or both

I did get it scanned at Advance Auto, but their computer was only able to tell me it had a misfire. I borrowed a good computer from my cousin and found that the number 2 and 8 cylinders were where the problem was. I guess I was thinking too much into it because after spending a lot of unnecessary money I bought a distributor cap and motor which fixed the misfire. I'm assuming that is what caused the catalytic converter to go.

glowing cats means you're dumping raw fuel into them. I saw this with cng conversions when the fuel injectors got stuck open, they actually caused the cars to catch fire. A misfire can do the same thing as the fuel's not getting burned.
