Rattling Catalytic Converter

Rattling Catalytic Converter

Postby morpheusoptic [OP] » Apr 04 2013, 4:10am

On my way home from work today I started the truck up and everything was fine. When I got off the highway and got on a side road I heard this horrible rattling noise under the truck. I pulled over and started looking to see if anything was coming loose under truck or in engine bay and everything looked good. I think I have narrowed it down to the cat on the passenger side of the truck. If I smack on it with the engine off, it makes quite a racket. I was looking at prices for a new one and you can either buy them as an assembly with both cats and the y connection to the muffler and connections to the manifolds, or you can buy just the cat. Seeing that it is an all welded assembly I can't just unbolt the one cat and put in a new one, also the new welded assembly is way more than I want to spend at the moment since I just had to replace a number of things over the past few months.

If I cut the pipes of both sides of the cat to fit a stand alone one, are there any clamps with a gasket of some sort that I can put on to hold it in place without having to get it rewelded or buy the expensive main assembly, kind of like what older cars used to have?

Also, other than the horrible noise, is there any other damage that this can do to the truck if it takes awhile to fix, other than the damage to the environment I guess? I don't have to worry about inspections here at least.

Thanks everyone for your input.

You can get the weld in cat's and take them to a muffler shop and have them welded in. It'd probably cost about $30 (labor) to have just one cat cut out and a new one welded in.

What is the o.d. of the pipes attaching to the cat? Looks like the cat has flared ends that the pipes slip into before being welded.
