Stock 2003 silverado 1500 exhaust

Postby nate78023 [OP] » Jun 19 2013, 1:53am

I don't have the money for a new exhaust right now so I was wondering how short I can make the stock one and stay legal until I can buy an aftermarket one? I have a 2003 4.8l v8 2wd extended cab. I have a friend who did this to his 2001 5.3l extended cab and thought it sounded pretty good for a stock exhaust. Also are their any other ways to make it sound good for cheap? I have a K&N cold air intake already.

I guess it depends on your state's law, specifically about mufflers and emissions. If you're required to have a muffler, chop it after the muffler. There are plenty of guys on here that have it dumped before the rear axle under the bed.

Well there ya go. Maryland requires a muffler too, so I'm going to do a true dual setup with a Magnaflow Tru-X X-pipe "muffler". It's just the two pipes combining into an X and then splitting again. The crossover is encased in what looks like a muffler, but is actually just straight pipes inside. But they don't need to know that

Cut the exhaust right before the muffler, then pick up a bullet muffler and a stainless steel band clamp. The hardest part will be fighting the rubber isolators off of the factory exhaust. As long as you have a muffler the letter of the law is satisfied.

Summit carries the bullet mufflers for $20-$40 and the band clamps for about $25. 'Good' and 'better' are subjective, so while I'd probably prefer to have a 12"-18" muffler for a more mellow tone, you may be totally content with the 3" bullet muffler you can get from Summit. It's a subjective, and as long as you have a muffler you're sitting in good shape.

I might just be cheap and obnoxious enough to try that right before I get my exhaust installed

I cut mine before the muffler and used a clamp and elbow pipe at autozone to make a "turndown" exhaust. Sounds awesome, cost me about $8
