What is this webbing stuff on my exhaust pipe?

Postby fox4wd1981 [OP] » Dec 17 2011, 10:54pm

I was looking around the truck and while preparing to install my new nerf bars I noticed this on the exhaust

it is located just after the Y behind the cats. What the hell is this thing? I have never noticed it before.

I've got one and I think it's in the same place. Dealer put it there when I was complaining about a vibration in the floor and a resonation in the cab. Didn't help....much. Not even sure why it would either.

It's the resonator. Helps to reduce the "cackling" or "backfire" at high RPM.

It is a flex pipe. It helps reduce vibrations caused by the exhaust connecting the engine to the frame.

Pretty sure that is a flex pipe, to keep vibrations and strain off your manifolds/headers. looks like it may be leaking by the black color on it. You may be hearing some new sounds from your exhaust (a leak) and maybe some fumes up front with the windows down. Any exhaust shop can straighten that up for ya.

Dont worry about it! There are so many extra parts that engineers put into exhaust systems these days. No wonder why cars arent as cheep as they used to be! Gotta pay their salaries and pay for all the little parts that probably have no benefit! Why is a flex pipe neccessary? The exhaust hangs on rubber mounts! Just sayin :)

I'd say because the rubber hangers do not flex enough when the engine moves under load. It also makes it act like the exhaust is shorter in regards to a solid piece of metal running the length of the truck.

If GM could save a buck by not putting it in, they would leave it off. However its presence probably means they have fewer other issues to deal with and in that way its cheaper to put it in.
