2010 Aftermarket locking fuel door

Postby BIG10Silverado5.3 [OP] » Apr 04 2011, 10:49pm

Hey guys,
I was doing some surfing and stumbled upon this cool locking fuel door replacement. Naturally, something this badass stimulated my impulse buy reflex. I assumed that installation would be a breeze, the product description clearly states "no drilling or cutting".

Upon delivery I took a peek at the installation instructions. Apparently, the removal of the fuel door requires 2 holes be drilled through rivets that hold the door to the rear fender. WTF?

I am reluctant to drill into my brand new truck, not to mention drilling that close to fuel lines.. I suppose I could pay the dealer to remove the door for me. Where is the fun in that?!

I'm wondering if anyone has more information, or a "how to" on how the fuel door is dis-assembled?

Thanks,
Rick

You could always take a grinder and grind off the heads of the rivets.....

I agree with Hartski, If you have a dremmel tool with a small grinding wheel it would work well and would not damage anything, I have always wanted new ideas for using my dremmel. Also where did you order it from and what was the cost??

The rivets almost look like they could be removed with a specialty tool..

Big10, have you looked behind the fender to see if there are even any lines directly behind the rivets? If not and you're still worried about over penetration, rap some tape around the drill bit at the depth you want to stop at and drill at it. Post some pics once you get it installed, I might consider getting this and painting it white. Could you post up some front and back pics of it uninstalled?

Pretty sure you have to drill the center out of the rivets. Also let us know where ya got it. Think you started a new trend here
