Be Careful Buying a Silver Ice Metallic Truck!

Horrible Paint Job

Be Careful Buying a Silver Ice Metallic Truck!

Postby JLMO [OP] » Apr 20 2017, 11:18pm

So I recently purchased a new 2017 Silverado in Silver Ice Metallic. When I picked up the truck from the dealer I looked it over very carefully looking for imperfections, dents and dings that I know can happen in transport. After about a week of owning the truck I started to notice something funny with the paint. At first I thought it was road salt from a recent storm. After I washed the truck, my horror began. You definitely can not see the problem in certain light. As it turns out, the entire truck has brutal stripes in the paint.

I brought the truck back to the dealer and luckily they immediately saw the problem. The paint guy very matter factly said there was not enough paint on the truck. The dealer said they would open a case with GM. They stated, "We do not want to paint your entire new truck, and you don't want us to paint your entire new truck."

I have owned 5 silver vehicles in the past and have never seen anything like this. I know some will say I should have seen it before I bought the truck. However, I argue that unless you know to look for the possible problem, most would miss it.

My recommendation to anyone looking at a silver GM truck to look at the vehicle in various lighting. We could clearly see the problem when the truck was brought inside a service bay.

Hopefully I will get a replacement soon (an employee at the dealer totally screwed me out of three weeks because he never contacted GM)!

I guess I am naive in that I am surprised this truck ever left the factory.

Yes you are right, Stevie Wonder could see those imperfections in that light.

Read this and had to go look at my 2016 closely, same color. After a little over a year no issues. Sorry to hear about your issue, hope they treat you right.

From what I have heard and seen... the paint work is an area that GM has started to cut corners on. You never saw chit like this on trucks not manufactured in the last couple of years. Its just crazy to think that about the prices of trucks now and the quality issues that seem to be fairly consistent.

I will disagree with parts of your statement. Remember the '90's trucks, especially the 2-tone ones? Paint fell off those things in about 3-5 years, with only primer showing. It was most common on the roof / hoods of the trucks. If I remember correctly, the two tone blues and browns were the worst of the bunch.

I do agree though that this shouldn't have ever left the factory. Maybe a compressor went down, or they were very near empty in the paint reservoir on this truck??? We'll never know. It is good to know though that it isn't a "Silver Ice Metallic" thing, in that others here haven't noticed the issue. I'm guessing it's a one-off issue with this truck, that could have just as easily happened to any color.
