Broken Spare Tire Hoist

Broken Spare Tire Hoist

Postby Phnx [OP] » Apr 29 2012, 3:38am

So i was messing around with my truck, trying to see how to lower the spare tire. I knew HOW to do it, but i used the wrong end on the bar (used the one for the jack) by mistake. So i basically messed up the whole inner workings of the hoist. I compared my dads truck to mine and on the inside of the shaft of my dads is a Square peice to lock onto with the bar things. But when i looked in mine, i had nothing there but a bunch of scratch marks. I fail to see how me accidentally putting the wrong end in, could completely ruin the whole mechanism. So is there anyway to lower the tire manually and remove/fix the hoist?

Wow thats really odd. The only thing i can think of is to try to get your spare lowered out of the way somehow and weld a nut on where the nub should be

My advice? torch it off and put it in the box. LOL
I tried to get mine down when I was stranded and it was ceased, what a great spare tire that was.

Best of luck!

I know it. The secondary latch was rusted up on mine, soaked it for a day and it still wont release fully. If I knew the tire would stay up without it, the second latch would dissappear

I thought about that. but is there a way i can cut the cable by pulling down the hook part that holds up the tire? I dont know if there is enough slack in the line but if i could do that, it seems like it would be alot easier then torching it considering i dont own one :)

on this topic, I noticed when i bought my 05 Sierra the other day the spare was laying in ther box, I didnt think anything of it. figgured they just hadn't put it back under there after checking it. I got under the truck today and realized someone had taken a torch to the spare tire holder, and cut the bracket to get the tire out, so apparently mine dosen't work either. I'm probably just going to look for a nice way to mount mine in the box, that system GM uses for spares is a pain in the rear, was the same on my Blazer.

you should be able to cut the end " nub " off the cable with a grinder. Once you get it fixed you could probably use a cable clamp to use as a new end.

Or look at a junkyard for a used spare hoise assy, then lube the heck outta it before you put it on.
