Decals VS Paint

Postby Foggyman [OP] » Nov 22 2011, 9:29pm

Went to my local autobody shop which I have used for years and asked about painting the wheel-well outline of my 2011 Sierra.
Don't know how to exactly describe this, so please have patience.
I asked about painting the first (up from the wheel) body curve and then asked about just painting the second body wheel-well curve (up from the wheel). Also painting the middle depression of the hood.
Info from this site has suggested since I live in a salty winter enviroment not to put on wheel-well flares as they will cause rusting. That is why I was checking out the idea of painting.
WELL!!! It was suggestd why don't I just use Decals the color and placement you want as painitng is permanent.
I was told the decals would last as long as paint and are removable.
Never heard of such a thing and seems maybe a pretty good idea. Would the decals last through weather, washing etc ???
Any feed back about this application idea would be very much apprecisted.
Regards,
Wil

I have seen people vinyl wrap entire cars. It looks good as long as the shop is good at it. The nice thing about it is when it starts to get chipped up and look bad, just pull it off. Then decide to have it done again or not.

As far as them lasting as long as paint, in not so sure that is correct. Paint is just that and is permanent. I highly doubt vinyl wrap will look like the paint on my truck after 250k. As long as the paint is well taken care of, it should last forever(or close to it).

Foggy, pretty much every strip kit sent out by any manufacturer is vinyl now. All the Camaro's and Mustang's are done this way and usually by the dealership selling them. I watched a guy stripe a Camaro in the show room while I was waiting on my wifes Terrain to have maintenance done. I agree with the shop as well, it looks decent and is hard to tell and if you change your mind down the road it just comes right off.

Yes they last and are removable but they do make a mark when removed. Ever see an old cop car or fire truck? You can see the shadow left by the decals.

Usually a clay bar and good wax or a light wet sand will take care of that problem

I work for Best Buy. I can tell you that our Geek Squad vehicles have extensive vinyl wrapping. The cars start out black. All of the other colors are vinyl. We run the vehicles 4-5 years in pretty hard use and harsh conditions, with no issue. The vinyl is a 3M product that releases quite easily.
