G M Tonneau cover

trouble with a G M accessories tonneau cover

G M Tonneau cover

Postby mace [OP] » Mar 04 2011, 4:21am

I have a G M accessories tonneau cover, that came with the 2010 used truck I got in Dec., in Jan one of the support rods broke off at the end so the dealer replaced it then just the other day another rod broke off at the end, the service man said that they are too lose at each end and I needed to tighten up the brackets on the sides to make the rods fit tighter so they would not bounce so much and then the end would not break, I kinda figures I got the truck from this dealer and they should fix the problem but it seamed like an easy fix so I took off the side clamps and moved them to the next slot but it really didn't help as the side rails just moved back out anyway, so I took duck tape and put on the ends of the support rods to make them fit tighter to the rails, today while I am driving down the road I notice that the back of the cover is up so I stop thinking I just didn't get it latched tight but about a mile down the road the dam thing comes up again, I can latch it back down but it keeps coming up around 60 mph, It never did this till I messed with the clamps , I don't know who makes this P O S but the hook and lop on the sides really don't hold that well and the clamps that hold the rails don't seam to hold in the right place when I try to move them inwards and the support rods have a snap on each end that is the part that is breaking on me with two different rods since Dec. when I got the truck, sorry for the long post I sure would like some suggestions, I will go back to the dealer and see if he can do anything for it, who makes this Tonneau cover for them it has the bowe tie on it towards the back of the truck bed it looks nice on there but are all tonneau covers that are made to role up built like this? hope not.

I have the same one, I believe. Check my picture gallery.
This cover definitely flops around more than the Access cover I had on the old truck. But I have not had any issues with it coming loose, or anything breaking. I have to believe that something got broke before you got the truck, and the dealer is not looking at it very closely (or they have no clue).

I have a Truxedo cover that fits nicely and have had no problems with it at all. The description sounds a lot like yours, but no GM emblem.

Looked at your photo EKinMN, yup that looks just like mine except where yours has the G M C I have the bowe tie, everything was fine till I started trying to adjust the side rails in more so the rods would fit tighter, this I did on the advise of the service manager, wish I had just left it alone. It is the snaps on the end of the rods that are breaking off, and they said I needed to adjust the side rails in so they would not move as much thus the ends of the rods would quite breaking, I duno, I will be having a talk with the dealer next week, when I go back into town, is there supposed to be a little medal piece sticking out at the back on the drivers side for the latch to fit under, maybe that piece has broken off, I'm pissed off about the hole thing. Hay jepics thanks for the imput, so the Truxedo has snaps on the ends of the rods as well hmm, if the hook and loop on the sides would hold better then the rods would not move as much. To be continued Mace

Truxedo gets great reviews, as does Access. If I had it to do over again, I would buy the Access cover, same as I had on my Colorado. 6 years of harsh weather exposure, and never an issue.
Good Luck.

Dealership told me when I bought my truck to go aftermarket cuz the GM certified hardshell was overpriced and wasn't all the great.

If you bought the truck used with the cover on it, it will be covered by warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles. So if the vehicle has less miles on it that that..they have no choice but to replace it or fix it. We sell the one you have on your truck at the dealership here, but I still went with Truxedo when I put one on my own pickup.
So if you have less than 36K on your truck, just let the dealer worry about it. If they wont take care of it for you call GM Outfitters, they are the supplier of those covers and take care of the warranty.
Good luck to you.

I always thought that GM accessories like mudflaps, running boards, tonneau cover, etc only had a 1 year warranty, even if the dealer installed them?

No, if it is installed by the dealer, or AT the dealership then it carries the same warranty as the bumper to bumper does. 3years, 36,000 miles, if it is installed on a New vehicle. On a Used one, the warranty is good for as much of the 3-36 that is Left on the vehicle at the Time of install. OR 12 months which ever is LONGEST.
However, IF you are past the 3-36 bumper to bumper warranty on the vehicle, and you didn't buy it as a certified used vehicle, (which extends the 3-36 another 12-12,000 over and above what is on the odometer when you bought it,) then the warranty is good for one year from the date of purchase.
