Headache rack ideas???

Headache rack ideas???

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » Mar 26 2013, 4:43pm

Now that I'm confident with a welder (confident, not skilled ), I think I'll treat myself to some scrap metal and build a headache rack for the Silverado. I've uploaded some pics so you can see what we have to work with. My initial idea is to build a rectangle out of square tubing, run 3-4 horizontal cross members, and then put something like a Texas star in the middle. I can't go too crazy, cuz I have to see out of it ;). Thoughts? Ideas? Photoshop, anyone :D?

The biggest thing when fabbing something like a headache rack is to follow the body lines. That royalty core one looks pretty slick but it is perfectly vertical you seem to have the same body style as the truck on the bottom left pic; think of how much better it would look it the rack was tilted forward to match the angle of the back glass, just something to consider. One other thing would be to put the ears that stick up on the top slightly closer to the inside and mount a light on either side facing forward for long range lighting.

If it were me I would build the main hoop out of one piece of bent tubing. Then have one piece going across the bottom and two vertical members separating the middle section. Then use pieces of flat bar running horizontal to give it a billet grill appearance, or just sheet it with extruded steel. If you don't have access to a bender it could be built with relief notches.

I just finished one for my 2005 2500HD, it is similar to a ranch hand with some custom touches. Then before I had it powdercoated I sold the truck and bought my current nnbs.
So i thought I would mount it on my nnbs, except it sits like 3"-4" above the cab... i guess the nnbs cabs are shorter or the beds are taller.

Too bad you aren't in CA i would hook you up. Then again you are kind of lucky you're not in CA, the laws here are crazy!!

Easiest way is to make your rail plates then cut a piece a little over what you want for the uprights and play with the angle until it matches the angle of the cab. Then replicate it for the other side and make your verticals to the specs of the bed.

An easy way to match the edge of the cab is to install a 2.5" riser on the rail caps then build off of those.

A welding table, or a very flat surface will make life much easier.

I would try to build the rack with the side's angled in to match the cab. I find the rectangular racks look out of place, like they belong on an older truck (80's and down). And even on those trucks they look out of place.
