HOW TO OPEN TOOL BOX?????

Postby Machster69 » Mar 27 2012, 3:01pm

U need more hands, like 3 people! You hold both latches open, your other two buds wack on the lid with some small hand mauls on each side, trying to beat upwards of course! That doesnt work? Ide say its locked, which then ide jus drill it out and replace locks, or worst case... The latches are bad and they still have to be drill out(mine are rivetted)

I had my latch go bad and it would open fine, it would even move the opening rod, but it slipped on the last 1/8th inch and didnt activate the rod 100%... Ide say only about 90% which wasnt releasing the lid. So, remove the latches with whatever way is appropriate(depends how they are attached) then reach in and pull the rods with ur hands to open! Then order new latches... Mine was 36 freakin $

HOW TO OPEN TOOL BOX?????

Postby Machster69 » Mar 27 2012, 3:03pm

And i also have another single lid diamond plate box @ work, its the same pain in the ass to open! Both handles have to be open(most likely bc one is failing to activate the rod 100% on its own) then tye retarded box jus about requires a pry tool... If i pull hard enough(with my third hand) it comes open...

Hi,

Don't know if you have already tried this or already opened your tool box, BUT

Before bending or damaging it, I would go down to the local Lowe's or Home Depot and see how their boxes are built and how they lock. If you can find out who the manufacturer is then locate the place of purchase of your box.

All of this is an attempt to actually see how the latches work. Then you can come up with a game plan to open the box without bending or breaking it. I work at Lowe's and the Kobalt truck boxes they sell, the latching mechanism is spring loaded and has some adjustment in it. This may be why the latches even pulled open will not disengage the pins that lock the lid down.

Other manufacturers have different methods to deter theft... They hide their mechanisms, or place them behind reinforcements to keep them save...

Just some thoughts, :D

Sounds like its not locked, if you can pull the handles out, the lock isint on. Sounds to me like the linkage that releases the latches inside is either broken or disconnected.

Id do what was said above, drill out the rivets that hold the latches in then get to the linkage from there. Once you get it opened up, you can either re-rivet the latch back on, or hold it in with some small machine bolts / nuts.

Good luck!!
