How do I open the tool box?

Postby yamaha07 [OP] » Mar 26 2012, 2:41pm

I have a lockable diamond plate tool box that was given to me but i cant get it to open. The guy says it isnt locked just stuck but ive pulled on it and pried on it with no luck in it opening. So now im starting to think it really is locked and he of course doesnt know where the key is because its about 10yrs old. At this point im looking for any suggestions on how to open it, so if u have any ideas other then cutting it let me know, thanks.

HOW TO OPEN TOOL BOX?????

Postby quickdrraw » Mar 26 2012, 3:03pm

You must be smarter then the tool box to open it :)
On a serious note, WD40 or some similar product to loosen up any rust or corrosion that may have occurred over the years.

Try a bunch of random keys you may get lucky. Or YouTube search I'm sure they'll be a video on there on how to use a flathead or drilling it out etc. good luck

If it has a one peice lid try and twist it or just drill out the rivits on the latch with the key slot and you can replace it with a new latch.

I would suggest finding a latch that matches the one you have and then just remove the old latch all together.

X2 on trying some old keys(you wouldnt believe how many times this has worked for me). i'd say its locked. replacement locks are only about $10.00 at lowes or home depot so worst case just drill it out. a locksmith might not charge too much either you might give them a call.

If you any kind of numbers and/or letters on the outside of the lock, It may be something like "KY2". Search for that code on E Bay or do a Google search and you may find a replacement key for sale.

Thanks,

Rick

My old toolbox had springs that were so strong it would bind the latch. Try pushing in on the lid and pulling the latch. Of course if the latch won't pull out at all it is probably locked. I agree, replace both handles if that is the case. If one is corroded, they both are.

X 1 on pushing the lid down as you try the latch.

Its a single lid with 2 latches and i can get both latches to pull out no problem but it still wont open. Im starting to think its locked because the lid will move about half an inch but wont open any further then that, i tried pushing down on it also with latches held up but no luck. Ive already gone through one junk drawr of keys with no results, time to search the dresser i suppose. I might try to drill it but ive never attempted to drill out a lock or anything before so im a little sceptical. Just dont wanna ruin the box.
