I need some help right now. A little back story is that I am looking at buying a 1999 gmc 1500, but it is not in the best looking on the outside. I was wondering if these are fixable. The first problem is the big dent on the side of the bed. How would I go about fixing it?
The next problem is the rust. Down below is a picture of were the rust is the worst. What can I do to fix this? Could I bondo it?
and just for fun how much would you pay for this truck that has 165000 miles?
I'd keep looking. That rust is pretty bad on the rockers, only way to fix it is new rocker panels welded on (bondo is NOT a fix for rust) and it looks like the rust is extended up into the doors as well. Not impossible to fix, but not worth the time and money IMO since there are cleaner trucks out there to start with.
rocker panels and cab corners...fill fix that..is it going to be cheap? no..is it really worth it...eh, maybe if you have an emotional attachment or really really dont want to get rid of it...
i have seen these repairs done, and they can come out nice. youll just be down a few weeks.. since a good job requires drilling out the spot welds
I am curious why you didnt start repairing it sooner?
as far as this. idk if those prices are for you area..but trucks like this around here if it didnt have the ody rot (maybe some surface rust), still go for a couple/few thousand here
honestly though if you fixed the rust and the bed properly you "might" get your money back from selling it... depends on mileage and other issues to the vehicle
Those trucks were notoriously bad for rusted frame rails. If the rockers and cab corners are rusted then the frame probably is too. The fuel lines run inside the frame rails and they get killed by the salt too. I don't know what it is with GM but it seems that they barely even put any paint on the frames. And whatever primer they were using back then is total shit. It just doesn't stick to the metal. I have a 2010 Silverado and the paint is just falling off in chunks around the wheel wells and the rockers. My Toyota Camry is a 2009 and doesn't have a spot of rust anywhere on it. The rockers on the Toyota are also plastic which is a great idea.
