Velcro vs. snap-on; which brand, etc.

Need advice on a Tonneau cover

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » Mar 08 2011, 5:49pm

Next mod for my truck is a tonneau cover. My budget is pretty small, but the roll-up types that I'm looking at are cheap, anyways.

I'm going to do the install myself. Are there any no-drill covers? Are they as effective as the more traditional covers?
Which type is recommended- Velcro or snap-on? Also, what brands should I stay away from?

I have had great luck with extang..i personally dont like the snaps, cause they can tear and rip..the set up i have is almost like a hinge..u have to pull the cover past the rail and it snugs up tight.

I vote extang also. They're good covers.

What do ya'll think about Truxedo? Specifically, the TruXsport roll-up?

That's what I have and I love it.

I have had decent luck with the partial snap type on my S-10 and Sonoma. It was basically snapped to a frame, but 3/4 of it hinged up to allow access to the bed without having to un-snap anything. If you wanted to remove the whole thing you lifted it up pulled two pins, the shocks and un-snapped the back row. Very simple removal and only took a minute or so to remove. Can't remember the brand name of it, since it has been a few years since I owned the trucks.

I currently have a tool box in the bed of the truck, but have been considering going back to a tanneau cover myself. I really enjoyed the soft top that I had on the smaller trucks.

My father in law has one of the roll-up types on his truck (came with it when he bought it). He enjoys it durring the summer, but durring the winter he hates it. Basically with the snow melting and freezing allows water to builed up and freeze and then he can't get it to slide open. They do make drain holes to prevent the build up of water but it doesn't seem to matter how many times he cleans the drains out it still happens.

Just my experiences with different covers. Hope it helps.

I wouldn't mind one of the ones that roll up like a garage door and lock.
Dang it's hot!

That does look really sharp. I'm in kind of a debate about what exactly i want to do wit it at this point. I have two thought on it currently.
1. keep the tool box and add the cover.
2. Remove the tool box. Add under seat storage and then add the full cover. My thought on this is that I have a lot of Crap in the tool box currently and using the under seat storage would force me to reduce the amount that i have in ultimately reducing weight and adding mpg's.

OK... the one that a-a.com advocates is a fold-up. I can't do the fold-up, it's gotta be a roll-up, so I can have full access to the bed. But thanks for the article- I'm on the right path now.
