Old Headlight vs. New Style

Postby josh36530 [OP] » Jan 26 2011, 5:28pm

I had an '03 Avalanche and it was a breeze to change the bulbs in my headlights. I recently traded that in for a 2011 Silverado and loved everything about it until I tried to change out my bulbs. The high and low beams werent too terribly bad, the passenger side was a little time consuming having to take the air filter off. Last night I attempted to change my turn signal bulbs.......buddy let me tell you.....that sucked! Had to take the grill off of my truck and there's a small bolt between the assembly and the bumper that is not the most exciting thing to take off. Good luck to all are wanting to challenge the beast.

I've had my 2004 since new and still have the original bulbs up front. I'm not sure why you are already changing bulbs on a 2011. I'd vote to stay with what you have from the factory because most bulbs last a long time. My guess with GM is the "Engineering" that went into making the older models easy to service was thrown out the window because it was money that could be used someplace else on the vehicle. Have a great day. On another note, maybe there is an easier way to get to your front bulbs but I have not done it. Anybody else know of an easier way?

My old 02 silverado was a snap for getting to the headlights and turn signals. The newer ones are a little more of a pain but with a little work you can get to them fairly easy. He is right though, if you want to completely remove your headlight housing it requires you to access two bolts from under the front fender. Not sure why they made this such a PITA

I replaced the factory bulbs with all silverstar ultra's. I had them from my old truck and wasnt letting the dealership have them, $50 a set. Luckily they fit in the new truck.

The nbs does suck to change the bulbs out on the passenger side. At least you got your silvys in there.

Passenger side is easy, just pop out the air filter housing. The driver side is the tough one, because you have to work around the stupid washer fluid spout.

I just pulled one bolt, and bent the whole thing forward. I figure I won't change bulbs that often, so I can bend it a few times without breaking it.

yeah i freakin love mine, pull two pins and the whole head light comes off. gotta remember the harder they make it the more people bring their trucks in for service, plus the engineer gets another chunk of gold for every design change.
