Eventually I will be painting my truck with spray paint. I want to use oil based gloss black. Has anyone painted their truck with oil based gloss paint? And has the gloss faded after a few months?
I considered that. But I can buy oil based spray can for $1 a piece. And I would much rather save money than have a professional looking paint job. I know it's going to take awhile, but with enough coats I think it will look fine. I can always get it professionally done down the road when I have more money.
Hey Tyler, how about a pic of your truck? Maybe some other member can make some suggestions about what to do! How bad is the paint really? And what year, model, trim?
There is no way the economics of spray paint can be less than buying real paint and a harbor freight spray gun for an entire truck. Two things will play in. One you can buy very durable single stage acrylic on Eastwood on sale and you won't need clear, two you will have a much more durable paint. You can actually strip most rattle jobs with paint thinner even after it dries.
What about monstaliner colors on the truck? I think that is a really Nice look in older trucks.
If it's an older truck you are just looking to make look presentable for cheap and plan to beat it up then I wouldn't hesitate to do a oil based job. It's cheap and easy to touch up. Do a google search for 'roll on rustoleum paint job' to give you some ideas. You can get a no line finish that looks really good, but takes a lot of elbow grease.
In the long run it would be easier to prep it and have Earl Shieb or Maacco spray it for $200-$300, but then you can't claim to have painted it yourself.
If you want it to be a nice daily driver that lasts awhile then the above ^ is null and void.
