Removed rain guards, and now I have a problem...

Postby carsonhowe22 [OP] » Jan 31 2012, 1:42am

So I decided to finally remove the tacky rain guards that were already on the truck when I bought it, and now I've got a problem. I was able to get most of the adhesive off with 3M adhesive remover and a plastic putty knife, but now I'm left with something still on the truck. I can't tell if it's paint fade or just more leftover adhesive. Some of the easier stuff came off with my finger nail but the rest of it I can't phase. I'm taking it to an auto detailer tomorrow to see if they can do something about it, but if worse comes to worst I will just buy another set of rain guards since they won't look as bad as this does now. Only thing is, I would like to get a crew cab set so that the extended cab window guard doesn't jut out on one end. Only thing with that is, I don't know if the crew cab window set will fit since it is obviously a wider window. I understand that if it will fit the rain guard will have a big of "overhang" but I really don't care about that as long as they don't jut out like the ext cab rain guards do. My extended cab window looks pretty wide, I think a crew cab set could fit, but I don't want to waste my money either.

So I have two questions:

1. From the pictures can you guys tell if this is leftover adhesive or paint fade? Is there anything I can do about it?
2. If I have to end up getting another set of rain guards, could I get a crew cab set to fit my extended cab truck?

It kind of looks like you took clear coat off in that second pic, but it's hard to tell. If you run your fingernail over the area, can you feel it catch something?

It's rougher where the stuff is, but it was like that before I started putting adhesive remover on it. That was what was left after I took the majority off with a hair dryer and my fingers.

Maybe see if you can find one of those rubber wheels or whatever they are called to remove it? Wonder wheel?

I think you're talking about a 3M eraser wheel?

Those are fairly expensive, and I don't really want to take the chance that it won't work and waste money. If I can't do anything about it I'll just get another $30 set of rain guards and be done with it.

The residue from mine was like a dark gray

So do you guys think I could get the crew cab rain guards and those work? Or would the crew cab back windows be too wide?
