replacement bumper/ grill guard

Postby mace [OP] » Dec 18 2010, 9:52pm

I just bought a used 2010 Silverado 1500 crew cab LT, I want to put a Thunderstruck replacement bumper/grill guard on it, they weight 210 lbs, my dealer thinks that is too much weight to put on a 1/2 ton pickup, but the Thunderstruck people say they make them for the 07 and up Silverado's , there the only ones that I have found that make them for a 1/2 ton pickup, I put 150 lbs of weight across the front of my truck and it dropped it down 1/8 of an inch, then I added another 50 lbs and that dropped it down another 1/8 inch, for a total of 1/4 inch drop with adding 200 lbs to the front end, but I do not know how much we would be taking off when they take off the original bumper, is 1/8 to 1/4 inch sag too much? I live in southern KS,. deer country and deer accidents around here happen all the time. Dose anyone know of another place to get a replacement bumper/grill guard that might weight a little less. Is this too much weight to be putting out on the front end of a 1/2 ton pickup ? My dealer thinks I am going to screw up the ride of my slightly used pickup, what do you think, me and my wife want the protection this will give us but not at the cost of messing up the front end or making us spend mega bucks to make it work. Thank you for all your help .

I think It's your truck, do what you want.
With the weight of the stock bumper gone, subtracted from the weight of the new bumper and guard going on your new truck. I think the only thing your loosing in smaller pay load now. Keep up on your front end maintenance (grease and lube)
I like those bumpers, I think they look awesome.

I agree. In the end, the weight difference is probably not that great. If you wanted to, you could consider a leveling kit. Not saying it would make a difference as far as maintenance or repair, but if you are worried about the sagging, this would help.

thank you In2Trucks and EKinMN, For your advise, I am going to have one put on and will go from there, I may have to add a leveling kit, hope that is all I have to do, these things are not cheep but they are cheeper than getting the front end fixed up after hitting a deer, yes I think they look good on a truck also, I will post pictures when i get it done. thanks again Mace

I know this thread is a few days old but if you haven't gotten one yet then you might want to reconsider. Frontier makes them also and they have a lighter gauge for medium duty trucks. They're arond 180lbs. My friend has a Frontier full front replacement on his regular cab shortwide and there's been no front end wear to speak of. He's had it on for over 2 years.
