Silverado Side Molding

Silverado Side Molding

Postby mramirez23 [OP] » Nov 25 2011, 5:14am

I have a white 2008 Silverado LTX, and my side moldings are turning a faint yellow. They wouldn't be that noticeable, but next to my beautiful white paint, it gets noticeable. I have tried wax cleaners, waxing, buffing, very light rubbing compounds to no avail,

Any suggestions?

Pull them off. I think the trucks look better without them anyhow.

There's a lot of people around here that de-mold/de-badge their trucks. I haven't done it myself. I'm not against it, but not a huge fan of it (I just like my molding). However, in your case I'd go for it! ;)

I've got the white door molding as well and if they started to yellow and I couldn't bring them back I would pop them off as well. Luckily they don't have a chrome strip or they would already be gone.

I don't have white, but was able to get new moldings put on at the dealership under the factory bumper to bumper warranty. I was told by the body shop that the moldings are only painted with one coat of paint from the factory. The other problem is that the adhesive fails and the moldings start peeling off. Mine were peeling and the dealership ordered new ones. The new ones are painted to match with 3 coats of paint. Then they used something to make the 3M tape stick to the metal better to eliminate the peeling off again, possibly epoxy...not sure though.

I agree that the trucks look cleaner/newer without the moldings. But with the way my wife parks, I had to keep the moldings on to protect the doors.

A good trick I found to combat this problem on my '04 Silverado is to pour some acetone on a rag and rub the side moulding. With a little elbow grease, you can wipe the yellow residue off of the rubber moulding. My truck has white moulding, so if yours is a color other than white, I can't say for sure if the color will be compromised.

Good luck.

I have an '07 white Sierra and my moulding started yellowing also. I went to a paint shop nearby, and the shop owner charged me $35 and used some 3M rubbing compound in a light purple bottle, and by hand, cleaned them up pretty good. Afterwards he said to put wax on them immediately and to keep them waxed, and I haven't had any trouble since. I see if I can get specific product info and post it.
