Tonneau Cover saving you fuel?

Postby twday87 [OP] » Dec 20 2011, 7:05pm

I'm thinking about getting an extang/truxport bed cover and I was just wondering if it has saved you all any MPG's? Also I'd like to see pictures of your covers and what you think of them. Can I use any kind and also keep my plastic bed liner in my bed? my bed liner comes over the side rails.

I want one that I can either roll up/take off to haul my four wheeler around. I dont know whats better. I've seen a few of those tri-fold ones that look pretty sweet.

Let me know fellas

Yes it will help fuel mileage somewhat. This subject has been covered here and you can search for it. Which one is better? That depends on your budget. Trifolds are nice but more cost and cheeper versions of trifolds, leak over time. Some of the discount stores sell standard tonneau covers but they can be low quality. You should also look at locking tailgate latches to keep out the "little bit" dishonest thiefs out. The real thief may just cut it.

I have the OEM soft cover. It is fairly watertight. I really do not see any MPG differnce, but i only had the truck a couple weeks before i put it on. Same with my previous truck -- no difference.

And no, you should have no issues with your liner.

I have a BakFlip HD cover, recently installed on my truck. There is no gas mileage difference what-so-ever. I was getting 14.2mpg before the cover and i'm getting the same since it was installed. As for the cover iteself, I love it. It's a tri-fold that opens all the way so I can have complete access to my bed. Plus it looks great and operates well. Highly recommend the cover, but not for fuel saving purposes (I didn't get it for that anyhow).

I have the tonnopro trifold. It is the same cover as the extang(compared with my bosses extang trifecta side by side). Very good quality and great warranty. But, not any real difference in fuel mileage. Maybe .5 mph on the highway, maybe.

I have a Provantage tri fold. Also great. Easy to put on and take off. Keeps bed clean. Whether it improves MPG or not I don't know but I did just about hit the trucks estimated highway value with it on a long trip.

Mine saves a bit of fuel..less drag. I have a Lorado brand roll -up velcro. It is great doesnt fade, seals water out and it has a lifetime warranty. You can aldo adjust the tightness for the change of seasons.

My friends and I make regular trips to Lake Cumberland in KY every year which is a 500 mile round trip. I made many of the trips in my completely stock '89 Silverado before getting my Tonneau cover and always checked the mileage I would get. After installing the cover I consistently measured a 1.7 mile increase in my mpg's. I just purchased my '11 Silverado a few weeks ago and am looking forward to seeing what kind of mpg's the new truck gets.
