Tool Box

Tool Box

Postby Larry64 [OP] » Nov 13 2011, 10:24pm

OK, I went from a little truck with a club cab back to a big truck with a standard cab. All I ever used the room for was guns and gear. I want to get a cross bed tool box for that stuff now. What tool boxes do you like? Aluminum, Plastic, two doors or one large door? Just lookin for ideas. Thanks.

Of the two boxes I have had, I preferred the aluminum (unpainted, not black). I too also preferred the one singe large lid. I could get a mess of things in this box that were to big or long for the wing type. The handles to open it were positioned close to the sides where you could reach them form the side of the truck (one on each side of the box). I believe the box I preferred was made by a company called DEE ZEE. It was a great product and lasted many years without a single problem.

I have a Weatherguard 127 in my truck. They are some of the best toolboxes out there in my opinion :D

I would never get plastic, the plastic fade and degrade with age, not to mention become brittle. Also, with plastic, thiefs are more inclined to break them open. Although, even the aluminum aren't too hard to open up. I prefer unpainted diamond plater personally. Not sure what you're looking for personally, but I like the rectangle boxes that fit below the bed line. But everyone has different preferences.

I currently have a Delta Champion Low-Profile Black box, single door in the bed of my truck. I do like it, but will be taking it out and trying to sell it in about a week. My needs have changed and I will be installing a BakFlip HD tonnaeu cover. I need my bed to be more of a weatherproof trunk at this point. In any case, I did like my box. I think Delta makes a fine box and I really liked the low-profile black box, as it was hardly noticable. Looked great with my Line-X'd bed.

I agree - avoid plastic. They won't last and don't support any weight, plus are too easy for thieves to get into. Look around and you'll see how they bow down in the middle when they've been used for awhile and then won't latch and take on water in the rain. I have three right now and the one I like the best and use the most is the single door, below the bedline one. I have a plain-Jane white two door steel model that was on an old 2WD parts truck that I bought. It's great and is watertight but when I put it on my 4X4 was a bit too high to get to stuff in the center and a bit akward reaching in from the bed sometimes so it's now on the front of my car trailer. I have a single door diamond plate on an S-10 farm truck and it's great for what we use that truck for but it would have to come out to put a canopy/cap on the truck. For my 07 GMC Sierra I bought a single door below the bed line box that I can use whether I have the canopy on or am pulling my 5th wheel. The only thing better for me would be one of the combo aux fuel tank single door below the bedline models.

the best tool box i have seen is my buddys with his titan which i am about to buy off of him it is one that comes above the bed abour 2 inches, then he sprayed it with bed liner and it came out a dark black with a matte-ish finish looks really mean, you can really see the diamond plate well

I got a used Kobalt box of Craig's list, they are built by Better Built boxes. It's a single lid with push button locks on the sides so it's easy to open, unpainted diamond plate box needs some polishing but looks decent.
