Tow Mirrors FAQs

Postby AbramJ [OP] » Dec 31 2013, 6:12am

So after the countless number of new posts about Tow Mirrors I thought I’d try to make a small write up to address all the “Tow Mirror FAQs” (at least for the ‘07.5-‘13 trucks)

First I would like to say I am no expert (and if I miss anything those more knowledgeable please add in here) and I currently do not have Tow Mirrors, but it is on my mod list, so I have been reading up on them.

There are many options for Tow Mirrors, OEM and Aftermarket. Here are links to a few of them: (The links are mostly to demonstrate what the mirrors look like and the different kinds and are not a recommendation of where to buy the mirrors)
OEM Tow Mirrors with turn signals and power/heat
OEM Tow Mirrors manual
Aftermarket OEM style with turn signals (in glass like OEM) and power/heat
Aftermarket OEM style with turn signals (on mirror housing amber LEDs) and power/heat
Aftermarket OEM style with power/heat
Aftermarket OEM style manual

The mirrors can be bought from a number of sources (i.e. http://www.GMpartsdirect.com, http://www.eBay.com, http://www.am-autoparts.com, etc. etc.) and prices range from the low $100s to over $400. I suggest you search around for a good deal or go through one of the site sponsors to see what kind of deal they can give you.

Now for the big question that comes up a lot, “I have power/heated mirrors, but not signals, if I buy Tow Mirrors with signals will they work??” The short answer is YES they will work. If your truck came from the factory with power mirrors the wiring is already there and part of the plug from the stock harness. Every member who has bought Tow Mirrors with signals that did not originally have signals has had no problems with the signals working. From my reading here on SS.com and elsewhere on the web the trucks with power are pre-wired for the other options. If you are still unsure check the build sheet in your glove box for the RPO codes of: “A31”, “DL8”, and “DL3”. (I think those are all the codes.) A grey area, though, are for W/T trim level trucks. For these you will have to check for the RPO codes on the build sheet. The general consensus, though, is that the power mirrors are not a simple plug and play affair as in the higher trim levels.

Another question that comes up: “How do I install my new mirrors??”. Luckily for all of us fellow SS.com member “SilveradoZRV” wrote an excellent “How To” article on this very subject (this works for the small stock mirrors and Tow Mirrors): DL3 mirror “How To”

One can also use the search function on the forums to find all posts that have anything to do with tow mirrors: Search: “Tow Mirror”

Hopefully this write up clears up a lot of the main questions about Tow Mirrors and can now be the thread where further Tow Mirror discussions can take place. If I missed anything or provided wrong information others can add or correct me too.

Pretty impressive what the search function can do. But in all seriousness nice write up I hope this clears up a lot of confusion that many members seem to have.

I'd like to convert to them, but having buttons that don't do anything bother me.
