Truck frame

Paint vs. coating

Truck frame

Postby DaDeO [OP] » Jun 12 2010, 4:25pm

Just curious, what does everyone think of Chevy using the tar like coating on the frame vs painting the frame. My '96 has been devoid of all the coating for years now, and of course has been rusting! I realize that the vehicle supposedly is made to last only 10 yrs, so maybe it's no big deal.

I would just clean it with a wire brush and coat it with that black rattle can tar or under coating.

I was wondering about what others thought on Chevy's use of that coating vs. using paint.

I was extremely disappointed..my '06 Nissan Titan had a rhino-liner like, rubber composite on the undercarriage that would have lasted forever. Its no big deal down south but if I was living in the north again, I would get it redone...the salt on the roads during the winter would just eat away at it...I'm sure GMC is lloking to save money. Its also a total pain if you work on your vehicle..9ause in hot conditons it get all over the place

to be honest....i think it sucks very bad..i saw that 2012s just itting on the lot already have the black wax peeling off the frame. I have a post on this as well called "black wax peeling off frame"..i ended up getting mine ziebarted and i touch it up with as seen on tv "flex seal" which is a rubberized undercoating. You woulgd think after all these years gm would stop smearing wax all over an already rusted frame :(

Also on a warm day if you change the oil my arms get all full of the stuff!!!! so in the summer it comes off then in the winter the salt gets it and then you go through a underbody flush car wash and the water takes it right off. All seasons it comes off :o I I would love to be at a gm plant and see what these frames look like before they put the wax on the frame. I have a feeling they put it right over a already rusty frame. Like i said above i seen a 2012 with brown rust on the frame already

It probably gives a small amount of protection, but also keeps people who are shopping for a new truck from saying "Hey this truck is rusty already"!

I watched mine come off the transporter right from the factory, it already had rust on the frame in front of the rear tires, i pointed it out the service manager & what they used was zero rust, then they spot sprayed semi gloss chassis paint on the effected areas, so far it looks ok even after the salty Mich.roads this past winter.

I would recomend having it ziebarted or if you want to do it yourself i would go with the por-15 if you want to paint it on...The spray i uised just for the heck of it was that flex seal as seen on tv...to my amasement i cant believe how good this stuff works!!! better than the ziebarting i got!!! pretty soon gm is gonna put have to put "frame touchup" under the Maintenance 1 schedule in the back of the owners manual :(
