How to Install Aftermarket Cruise Control

Postby davidbarrett [OP] » Apr 15 2011, 10:57pm

I recently installed a cruise control that was purchased from The Cruise Control Store. This can be achieved by a novice with soldering capabilities.

The price of everything you need to successfully install the control is $289.95 plus shipping. It took approximately 2 weeks for delivery and I was able to pay using PayPal.

I am a novice when it comes to doing my own mods, but I can solder so I found it fairly easy and it took 3 hours, most of that time was figuring out how to remove the cowling under the steering wheel and the one below it.

Here are the cruise control installation instructions right from the site.

The first step they say to do is disconnect the negative side of the battery for 3 minutes so you don't cause the air bag to go off. I also plugged a 12 volt source into the cigarette lighter as my mechanic said it would keep the security codes for the radio and save me having to put them in once I connected the battery.

Next step was to remove the cowling below the steering wheel, pull the steering adjustment knob off, remove the cowling, mine had no screws just tabs and be careful not to break them. The lower part had two philips screws and one bolt and came away easily.

In the upper cowling drill a 3/8 hole as per the instructions and feed the control wires through and you can point it to suit as it comes with special washers see attached.

You then have to make up the two plugs that come from the control and mate them to the module. Once all the wires are past the bulkhead you can reinstall both panels that were removed.
Now here is the hardest part, you have to solder 5 wires on to the connection box shown below

There is 3 on top and then 1 underneath and that is hard to get at, I wrote down where the plugs went to on the top side and then removed the plugs to give me room to turn it over and solder the 4th wire in place. the 5th wire is soldered onto the brown wire that goes to the acceleration pedal via the plugs that they supplied. Then its a matter of routing the wires and making it look neat, I just used the ties supplied for the wires and for mounting the module on the back wall.

Good luck if you decide to take the challenge, the instruction attached are very good, one other thing you will have three wires coming out of the supplied module which was not used on my vehicle. :)

What's your opinion on the quality of the cruise control arm? It looked somewhat cheap to me... (at least compared to OEM)

I've been looking at installing an OEM cruise but that has a lot of complications of its own when it shouldn't. Damn GM to hell for making the aftermarket OEM cruise control installs complicated when the new vehicles are already equipped with 95% of the options for cruise already.

Hi, the one I got looked great, and as I said was quite easy to install, I use it all the time and never yet had a problem with it. I hope this helps.

My 2004 did not have cruise when I bought it. All I had to do was go to the salvage yard and get a crusie/turn signal switch for $25 dollars and then replace the switch the ruck came with. That was all there was to it. Thanks GM for prewireing my truck lol
