How to Install Speakers in 2012 Sierra Extended Cab

Postby fishersfort [OP] » Feb 05 2012, 1:01am

I'm offering this how to, because I found no information about the rear "half door" speakers for my extended cab. So I'm fairly sure someone will find this helpful.

I talked with Crutchfield about my truck. The front door speaker was no problem for them. They offered retrofit brackets. The rear door was the big mystery. They would only say, "modifications required" and they offered no bracket.

My next step was to tear my doors apart and find out what the big mystery was all about.

What a shock! The front speakers are actually 6", not the 6 1/2 and 6 3/4 sizes quoted around the web. The rear doors had 5 1/2" speakers.

The following shows how I took the stock speakers and turned them into simple housings suitable for mounting Kicker 6" and 5 1/4" speakers.

Nice write up and a very clever use of the factory mounts, kudos!
What were the results like?

Holy EXCELLENT! Great write up, and very creative idea! I have the Bose system...is that what yours is (was)? My rear speakers may be different (crew cab), but I know they are very weak. This may be something for the mod list!

Nice Write up. I had every intention to do this right up a couple weeks ago. But was in a hurry and never got around to posting. Done pretty much same thing. Dermal tooled the 5 1/4 woofer then hack sawed the ring flush to plastic mold then just mounted the 6 1/2 to the molding.

Mine didn't have the Bose system. If it did, I never would have done this!

Frankly, I was shocked by how bad the stock speakers were. The worst I've had in a truck since the 1980s.

The Kickers were a huge improvement. Not anything like my wifes car with 12 speakers, but good enough for me.

Was it hard disassembling the doors without damaging them?

No, but I watched a youtube video before doing it. You need to know the trick for getting the door handle off. The rest is pretty standard for any door removal.

Nice write up. I imagine this would all be the same for a 2011 silverado. Those kickers you put in are just replacements right? Your not running an amp to them. I need some upgrades...stock speakers are CRAP.
