How to Size your Photographs for Optimal Viewing

Optimally, photos should be no more than 345 pixels high to see the whole photo without a scrollbar, as demonstrated below:

width: 322 pixels x height: 345 pixels - the whole photo is displayed

width: 349 pixels x height:374 pixels - there is a scrollbar for the height

width: 480 pixels x height:514 pixels - there is a scrollbar for the height, and the focus of the photo isn't in view

Large format - note that when large format photos go into a topic, the right side sometimes gets cropped off in the topic view, and can cause the subject of the photo to disappear. The reader has to click to open the photo to see the whole thing. This is typical when using another hosting website such as photobucket as a source.

Resizing is easy in Microsoft Office Picture Manager - your photo editing software should have a similar feature. NOTE: I always save the altered photo with a new name so I don't lose the size or resolution of the original (for example, IMG_0535 becomes IMG_0535a).
