Adding a backup camera?

Adding a backup camera?

Postby NewToTruck [OP] » Jan 18 2012, 2:43am

I have a 2011 Silverado Crew Cab LT without a backup camera. I am wondering what is the easiest or the cheapest way to add one to our truck. I checked some parts online, but the ones I have found all have mirrors etc. Do I need to replace the mirror I have now? This mirror has On Star capability built in.

I'm going to the dealership to have my 2010 serviced, and I'm going to ask about having the backup camera installed. They offered it when I bought the truck, and I declined. I've never had any trouble backing up to my trailers... until now. Man, this 2010 is hard to see out of the back! I can't seem to get used to the mirrors.

They sell some after market ones for under $200 where the camera mounts on the license plate bolts and the monitor looks like a navigation unit attaching to the windshield. The factory ones can cost up to $1200

My buddy had one that he installed around the license plate and he had it about a week, said he really liked it. Stopped at a department store, came back out and someone pried it off some how. People these days.

$1200! I guess I won't be getting one.

Actually, I do not even know what it looks like. I do not recognize any cameras on other trucks. Is it easy to be ripped off?

A lot of the afternarket ones come with "theftproof" bolts to stop them from getting stolen. The problem with that, is how much damage will the thief do to your truck before he realizes he can't get them off? They do make aftermarket cams that are built in to the tailgate handle, but I'm sure they get ripped off too!

Thanks! That is more like it. I already have the OnStar rear view mirror. I wonder if it gets cheaper than $599.
