Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

08 Silverado Crew Cab LT

When I bought my truck about 9 months ago I got a great deal on it. I was looking for a extended cab but the price was more than right on a low mileage crew cab (36,500 miles). I did want the package w/ fog lights, DIC panel and steering wheel audio controls, but this one did not have them. I bought the truck and being a very good backyard mec I started sourcing out what I wanted and with the help of this forum got to work.

Did the DIC swap first (plug and play) than fog lights (plug and play) and that was it for a while. All those parts I sourced out from gm parts house direct. All were GM parts and new and on a scale of 1 - 5 with 1 being easy and 5 hardest the DIC was a 1 and the Fog lights were a 2.

After further research I found out that the steering wheel upgrade for audio controls was going to also be a plug and play if you have cruise control and anything but the basic radio. I have the AM/FM single disc CD with XM and on-star.

Bought the steering wheel friday and just finished the install. Took all of 30 minutes (10 minutes of that was waiting after I disconnected the battery waiting to unplug the airbag)

Whet on with no issues and the audio controls work great.

Easy upgrade. If you are on the fence all I can say is just do it. On the 1 - 5 scale it was a 2.

Did you take any pictures with it apart or of the connector? I'm just curious if my truck would have it or not since I do not have XM and Onstar. How much did you pay for the steering wheel?

I bought a new steering wheel from the local dealer and it cost me $165.00

I kept checking e-bay and used ones were going for $150 plus shipping, so I got a new on at a used price. I did take pictures and it was a very easy install. Airbag was very easy to remove and reinstall and did not need a wheel puller to get old steering wheel off.

I will post pictures when i get a chance.

Most excellent!!!

That is what I call a "true backyard" mechanic... If you don't like the way it came from the factory, buy the right parts and change it! Chevy (GM) has been this way for years. Way back to my days of backyarding... the mid '60's... ooopps gave away my age... wink, wink

Two thumbs WAY Up!!!

:D

Is there an easy way to tell if you have the correct radio? I believe mine has XM capability as when I press the CAT button it tells me I have no XM service. I bought the truck on a private sale. I have the Onstar controls in the mirror as well and cruise control. Would love to add the radio controls if it is that easy. It's a 2007 NBS.

LOL thanks in advance.

Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Postby Dan11alterrain » Jun 10 2012, 10:50pm

Pn 25889498 for the harness and 25851951 for the switch. U have to slightly cut the wheel trim. The new harness has all the ground wires attached to one connection, I just extended the wires to match all the original ground wires good luck
