confused about setting up bluetooth!

Postby mna1628 [OP] » Jan 11 2012, 5:43pm

hello,
im trying to setup my samsung phone to my radio per bluetooth. the instructions as to the manual tell me to either use the steering wheel controls or the onstar mirror controls to setup bluetooth. i dont have any controls on my steering wheel and i put an aftermarket mirror on my truck and got rid of the onstar mirror so my question is does anyone know how i can get around this problem to set my phone up? i still have the mirror and im thinking about just switching the wires to the onstar mirror setting it up then switching it back to the aftermarket mirror but thinking that might not stay after i switch mirrors plus i dont want to do all that if i dont have to. so does anyone know of anyway to set this up ?

thanks for any info in advance mike

Yeah, put the mirror back in.

This isn't rocket science. If the bluetooth is connected through your OnStar equipped mirror, and you get rid of the mirror, you are SOL.

if you dont have the steering wheel controls and you only put the mirror back on to program the blue tooth then put your after market mirror back on. how exactly do you expect to use it once its set up? maybe im missing something..

i have had mine set up since the truck came home (25 Aug 2011) and i have had to add numbers... reprogram it .. add my wifes phone.. etc and without some way to gain access to the control features of the blue tooth menu you will be swapping the mirror out for everything..

heres the question why do you have an aftermarket mirror in??? what possible reason would you have a need for an aftermarket mirror?

First the aftermarket mirror has the temp, direction and it dims at night when someones on your butt with the headlights. i had no use for onstar so it was a no brainer for me! im reading my owner manual and it states the bluetooth runs thru the radio(i know the sound) but i took it as everything did. why are they selling radios with bluetooth capabilities. that is why im thinking its thru the radio and you have no need for onstar but to set it up. believe me this is only temorary as im going to get a new radio in the spring the money isnt there for what i want now so im gonna wait. temporary fix!!!

thanks mike

Ok, here's the no brainer...if you buy a new mirror that the only thing is missing now is OnStar, AND you plan on buying a new stereo in the spring (I'm guessing when you get your tax check back from Uncle Sam), then why don't you save your money and put it toward the stereo.

Here's a better question, why were you so set on getting the OnStar mirror out of your truck? Are you one of those conspiracy-theorist that thinks BIG BROTHER is watching your every move? Do you have something to hide? Do we have something to fear?

If you hate your OnStar mirror that much, and are set on the BlueTooth setup with your current radio....why not consider a BlueTooth adapter? They come from many manufacturers to fit many OEM and aftermarket radios. Most are plug-and-play and DON'T require an OnStar mirror. New for a decent one from a retail store like BestBuy they run about $70, but I've seen them cheaper on the interwebs.

I was under the impression that you had to have the radio controls on the steering wheel to have blue tooth. The Onstar has the feature/option to make hands free calls but you have to buy minutes to use it. The Onstar hands free calling doesn't use your cell phone via Bluetooth.
