Door rattles on extended cabs

Postby NHSilverado [OP] » Jul 10 2012, 12:38pm

I've noticed that when going over jarring bumps on the highway or uneven pavement I get a pretty rattle or noise coming from where the doors join together....my first truck with an extended cab so not sure if this is a normal quirk of the Silverado...i know the dash rattle pretty good as well...been almost 5 months since I've parked it so i cant go out and look at some things but figured I'd ask while I'm still away.

I don't relish the idea of having some tech tear apart the doors or dash looking for rattles, my experience is you usually end up with more rattles lol

Does anyone have any home remedy's?

Mine does this too. I'm thinking its because of the twist we put the frame under when traveling over something uneven. It seems like I can only hear the noise from the top of the door or the very bottom. I test drove another truck before I bought the one I have now, and that door just rattled all the time even on even road. So it could be something to do with the weather stripping not sealing as well as it should, or the latch not completely having the door shut.

If someone has a fix for this, i'd also like to know.

I wd40'd mine and it temporarily fixed. Someone told me to also loosen the bottom catch on the door and bump it inwards slightly and that would help.

I'm trying to upload a photo but my photo editor will not work. So, until then I wanted to tell you that my back door on the passenger side of my Extended Cab rattles normally on rougher roads but if you reach to the top of the plastic trim around the door you will see how easy it is to pull it away from the door.

I took mine to the dealer and they first tried to tell me thats normal. UH, NO....wrong answer dude.
I told them to send it to the body repair guys and they said the clips were to small so they put oversized clips on it and they said it waa hard to clip back in but now it's quiet.

SO, Don't go straight for the idea of adjusting the latch hook or messing with the seat belts. Although I would like to know what the clips on the side of the seat is for?

^^^YES! I was just gonna say before reading your comment about the massive gap you can pull the plastic from the top of the door. Kinda makes me a little weezy when I wonder what other things were skimped on, seems like the interior of these trucks are put together by Hellen Keller. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, but holy cats!

It is annoying and Helen would not have approved the poor quality they used to build this stuff. GM needs to rethink their build quality and try using some better quality materials.

Any luck in getting a picture uploaded? I'd love to see the bigger clips. Chances are what worked for you doesn't work at other dealers but I guess never know until I ask (won't be able to for maybe a few weeks)

Yes the top plastic is loose and flimsy as hell...I wonder if anyone is available to get these clips and if so if it could be a self install?

Door rattles on extended cabs

Postby Machster69 » Aug 13 2012, 3:16pm

On my 99 ext cab the third door had to be slammed from the top of the door to ensure it latched completely... After years of this i actually pushed some towels in the bottom of the door where it meets the cab then pushed on the door real hard to tweak the door to where i could shut it normally again...

I like the idea of the larger clips before I go this route
