Interior rear view mirror

Postby tonyd9 [OP] » Jun 10 2011, 4:39pm

2011 1500 LT, I would like to replace the standard interior On Star mirror with a auto dimming On Star mirror. Would this replacement be plug n play? ;)

It should be as easy as calling the dealer since they are on the lot right now. Or you could go check out the plug on one yourself. Let us know what you find out.

Chances are pretty good it's a plug-n-play. It would make sense to have the wiring to the mirror a standard harness. I've swapped out the base model OEM mirror on other vehicles and installed the one with compass and auto-dim, with no issues.

Re: Interior rear view mirror

Know it's just about a year since the original post, and it's probably been covered elsewhere (did a search, found this thread, seemed like a good fit, and my search skills stink.) Regardless, just did this this on my '11 Sierra. Part # is 15816792, got it sent directly to the house for just under $125. Depending on your Google-Fu, there might be an opportunity to do better.

And for a semi-half baked review . . .
It's a direct swap replacement, takes about 5 minutes if you have Torx screwdrivers/bits on hand. Pop the wiring harness lead on the mirror, loosen the Torx screw, remove the old mirror, reverse the steps to put the new mirror on.

Only been a couple days, still getting used to it, and probably the area that's going to be the most open to subjective interpretation. For me, the "flipper" mirror certainly worked fine, but I always seemed to knock it out of whack from a view perspective when adjusting it back and forth. But other than that, it's pretty cut and dried with the flipper - either the mirror is set for "day" or it's set for "night." Here in FL, early morning sunrises kinda count as night - depending on the time of year and the sun angle it can be silly bright through the back window. . .

New mirror adjusts itself for dimming conditions depending on what the sensors feed it. You can see one of them for sure in the top center of the mirror as you look at it from the drivers' seat. From what I've experienced so far, the "angle of attack" of a vehicle approaching from the rear in regards to ride height influences the dimming function. In my case, I've got a Z71 4x4 which does ride a bit higher than most cars. Seems like vehicles approaching from the rear have to get a bit closer to me than I'm used to before the mirror starts dimming to a level that matches up to what I'm used to from the manual flipper.

When all is said and done, I'm pretty happy, and I'd do it again:
- I knock standard flipper mirrors out of whack when switching back and forth.
- Yes, $125-ish for the mirror could be considered a bit pricey. But (and I could be wrong here), it's not bad compared to the option package$ that include the auto dimming mirror.
