Leaking sunroof?

Leaking sunroof?

Postby 08BigBlackZ71 [OP] » Jan 12 2013, 7:12pm

Well I've confirmed there is a leak in my roof somewhere. I'm thinking sunroof maybe 3rd brake light?

When I bought it I noticed the water marks very lightly. I was hoping previous owner just left the sunroof open at some point when it was raining.

Now after heavy days of raining here in Texas I see the spots are more noticeable and slightly damp.

I'm worried this is going to be a pain to fix or a expensive repair. Hoping someone with a similar problem can point me in the right direction.

Check and make sure the drain tubes on both sides are clear. If they are plugged water could pool in the channels.

+1 on checking the drain tubes. There should be four of them, one at each corner. I've seen people that smoke before where they flip their cigarette butt's out the sunroof and they don't get completely out the sunroof and have clogged the drains. The drains can also become clogged by dirt and leaves.

First thought is checking the sunroof like these guys said, but I had trouble on my 06 with the 3rd brake light leaking. Then after that, I heard that once you take them off, if not seated back on just right, they can/will leak.

Good Luck!

When you open the sunroof you should be able to see four holes in the corner of the well the sunroof going down in (from looking down into the sunroof from above.) They usually have drain hoses attached to them that run down the inside of the body panels to allow water to drain to the ground. Sometimes the openings get clogged, sometimes the clog is in the tube itself. A quick way you see if they are clogged is to pour water in the well at each one and see if the water exits to the ground.

Your concern is definitely understandable regarding the leaking sunroof. Please keep us updated on the status of any repair you have done. If you decide to have it looked by a dealership for this or any other service, please let us know. If you send a PM, please include your VIN#, name, situation, contact information, dealership information, and current mileage. Also, check out the link below designed by GM for Chevrolet/GMC owners. It will grant access to certain manuals, service history at the dealership, and other such information. I hope this is resolved rapidly for you.
