Low fuel light - when does it come on?

Low fuel light - when does it come on?

Postby robytar [OP] » Oct 06 2011, 9:29pm

Hello, I am still new to driving my silverado and was curious if/when the low fuel light comes on. The gas gauge was almost on E and the low fuel light still was not on or never flashed. When I filled up it took 24.2 gal. and I know the tank holds 26gal. I am used to other cars/trucks illuminating the light around 1/8 tank or so.

Thanks!

I sure that everyone's truck is a little bit different but my 03 turns the light on with 5 gallons left in the 34 gallon tank. BTW, not a good idea to get down that low, as fuel acts as a coolant to the pump. Running really low will shorten the the pumps lifespan.

My 2011 5.3L Z71 4x4 Crew Cab fuel light comes on at 40 miles and it means refill in about 10 miles because it has left me sitting beside the road supposedly with 30 miles left in the tank by the digital readout. Never again though!!

In the past I would fill up several of my other cars when the low fuel light comes on as I usually could go another 80 or so miles, now I will fill up when the gauge is on 1/4. Doubt I will ever see the light in my Silverado illuminate lol.

I was told by another sierra owner that he got less than 20 miles out of his tank after the light came on… which is why I had to bring him gas on the interstate…

He may have been fibbing to me, ill never know.

I have a ritual every weekend, I TRY to wash our cars and take them immediately a ½ mile down the road to fill up. If I don’t do this ill end up getting in one of the cars during the week and the low fuel light will be on… its almost a sure bet.

Im shocked that people with '99-'02 body style are only getting 30 miles or so until empty. My buddy has a '99 silverado with the 5.3L 2WD and we were coming back from florida on the high way and the low fuel light came on. We had a spare 5 gallon filled up in the bed of the truck so we decided to run the truck til it ran out of gas to see exactly how far one could go on the low fuel light. Long and behold we were very surprised when we went 83 miles then the truck died and we looked like smucks on the side of the road filling it up with gas lol.

Be careful running your trucks out of gas, doesn't take much to burn out the fuel pumps.
