New Steering Wheel Wrong Size

New Steering Wheel Wrong Size

Postby freeze916 [OP] » Jul 02 2012, 9:43pm

OK, so I bought a new steering wheel from fleabay under the assumption that it would fit my 2011 Sierra. It was listed as fitting Silverado, Sierra and all SUVs. I got it and it is the wrong size. the spline hole is way bigger on the new wheel than my original one. The manufacturer sticker on the new one I bought says manufactured 02/2010, so I am assuming it came from a 2010 model truck. Was there really a difference between 2010 and 2011 in steering spline sizes, or am I missing something. I bought it with the hopes of having steering wheel audio controls, as my truck didn't come with them. I was then considering using just the controls switch and retro fitting my current wheel, but even that is different and it won't work. The airbag bumpers that actuate the horn don't even line up. Is there a difference between the Silverado and Sierra maybe, or what else could cause the discrepancy?

I think your best bet (and most expensive) is to get a better wheel from the dealer. I don't know if you can trust your seller from ebay on this. Tell them what year you have, and what steering wheel you want.

I highly doubt that there is a difference, I think you've been taken by eBay (surprise, surprise lol). I would be highly surprised if any of the NNBS SUVs or trucks had a different sized connection/spline or wiring harness.

I don't know, it is definitely a GM truck wheel. It has the build sticker inside and all the GM controls and wiring harness. It just has a different size hole in the middle. I included a link to the ebay sale below. I didn't even pull my old wheel off because it is obvious it is the wrong size and the airbag won't even go on properly. The new one I bought was mounted on something at one time, I think it was a take-off. You can see where the bolt and washer were around the spline hole. I am just so PO'ed that it wont fit, I was really exited to get this done today.

The seller looks legit, not sure what the issue is. GMPartsDirect and GMPartWarehouse both have the same OEM part selling for both years in your trim level (and all levels for that matter). Can't quite seem to get an actual part # but they are definitely hawking the same wheel for all the NNBS Sierra w/ the audio controls, etc...

That's another thing that drives me nuts. they want you to order with your VIN instead of by part #, but when you are ordering an upgraded part, the VIN wont work. I emailed the seller to see if he knows the exact model it came off. I am thinking maybe a smaller SUV like a Terrain or something maybe? I don't know. Hopefully he will work with me, he has a ton of good feedback. He has it listed as for a Sierra, and from what I can gather, the spline size hasn't changed in almost 2 decades. Obviously everything else wont be interchangeable from that long ago, but the spline itself has always been the same. One other thing I found weird about the one I bought, it has no holes for the kooks from a wheel puller to go. Mine on my truck now has two oblong holes, one on each side of the shaft. the airbag won't fit properly either, it clips in, but the horn wont engage because the rubber bumpers don't line up.

Below is what it is supposed to look like:

When compared to the one on the ebay listing, the differences are obvious.

I did some digging and I think I know what happened. The steering wheel I purchased seems to be from an Acadia. Here is a link to an Acadia wheel on ebay, and the spline and airbag mounting look identical to the one I bought labeled as for a sierra. Notice the torx screws on the bottom are behind the plastic trim, but on the Sierra/silverado ones, they are totally exposed. The airbag rubber mounts seem to be in the same place too.
Hopefully the seller will realize this to and work with me.

Seller offered refund, so all is well. Wheel is on it's way back today. I am still looking to buy one. For some reason, I thought they were super expensive right from GM, but GMpartsdirect seems to have them for about the same I paid for this one. I just want to make sure it is the correct one before I order. I need the black leather, silver trim pieces and radio control. The wheel is listed as w/o wood, w/o heater, w/ accessories controls. Ebony. That is what i would need, right? I hate how hard they make it to order parts, no part number, just a crappy description.

Or maybe someone has the part number so I can just go order it from the dealer? I can't seem to find the part number, all these sits want you to 'order by application'. I'm sure the dealer will just ask for my VIN to order it, and that will just get me another wheel with only cruise.

The part number is 25853070 , if you order from GMParts Direct if you go to the description and put it in your cart the part number is displayed. They will not sell you a part that your VIN does not match with unless you special order and no returns allowed.

New Steering Wheel Wrong Size

Postby BlackZ71Silverado » Jul 10 2012, 4:29am

I have a wheel for GMT 900 I bought that's like new minus the wiring harness. It's ebony leather and has both sets of controls strached. If you need the wheel only I may be able to help you out. PM if interested.
