re-doing my interior

Postby DarkGothic [OP] » May 16 2012, 1:45am

I have been thinking of doing a few things for the interior of my truck.

1. I am looking for ideas on interior lighting. I am thinking blue cuz it looks pretty sweet and I am looking to "goth out" the truck... any ideas on what type of lights to use, where to put them, and how to wire them?

2. My headliner is this light grey and I want it to be black. Can it be painted? And if so, how does it come out/go back in?

3. I want to take out my center console and put a folding jump seat there instead. Where is the best place to find one? I want it to be dark grey leather to match the rest of the truck.

thanks,
Emily

i got led strips that i have to install myself this is what i got except i got green
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Waterproof-Blue ... 27c70789b4
good thing about these strips are you can cut them at a marked location to what ever length you need and solder on more wires to what you left on the roll and continue putting them other places untill you run out

some people like the led pods also like these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-10-X-4-LED- ... ba&vxp=mtr

you want to put them where you can see the light from the leds but you dont want to see the leds themselves you get to looking around your truck you can come up with all kinds of places to put them.

headliner should be recovered with what ever color and type of material you want. not sure on what all holds it up but any plastic trim that touches it will need to be removed for it to come down ie. the a pilars that run up the sides of the windshield, overhead console, grab handles, cover over the latch points for the rear doors etc. not sure if anything else holds it in besides all the plactic pieces

as for the jump set craigslist ebay salvage yards best bet probably be salvage yard cause from what i understand there are one or two plastic pieces you will need to go on your dash to fill in where your console meets the dash

hope that covers the most of your questions

Thank you very much. Your info was helpful, but for the LED's I have no experience soldering wires and for the headliner, do you mean that I would have to put another headliner underneath it to make it the color I want?

The headliner is material with a foam backing on it that is glued to a piece of plastic. Once you get it down you will pull the material and foam off of the plastic its glued to. Once you get the plastic cleaned up you lay out your new material over the plastic then fold half of it back to where you can use a 3m spray adhesive on to the plastic and the foam backing on your material. Wait a few mins for glue to set up then fold material back onto where you glued making sure yoy dont have wrinkles. Then same process of folding back and gluing to other half. Once its dryed for a bit you can trim the excess material off by going around the plastic with a good sharp razor blade or such. Once you get it down you will understand the process a little better once you see what your working with. If you think you cant handle recovering it yourself an interior shop wouldnt charge that much to recover it if you pulled it out and going to put it back in yourself. Price probably wouldnt be to bad even if they removed and reinstalled it also

Thanks. I just was at a parts store today and they mentioned using fabric paint. What do you think about that?

ive never used the fabric paint so i dont know what the quality of it is. if you did use the paint i would think you would want to remove the headliner from the truck to paint it to keep from getting the paint all over everything else in the interior. and i say if your going to pull the headliner you might as well go ahead and recover it. as i explained before the recovering process is not that difficult. Plus you could go with some type of material that doesnt look stock, like suede leather or a crushed velvet. i could go for days recovering and repainting things in our trucks and get the goth look your going for. i think either black or a dark purple crushed velvet would add the look your trying for. i wrapped a few interior peices of a honda that i had in a material that looked very close to black crushed velvet. It turned out great, my boss even said i was in the wrong profession, and that i should be customizing cars. if you were closer i would be willing to give you a hand with your project.

Em, if the fabric paint isn't real pricey just buy a can and try it on a piece of scrap material. if your happy with the results then pull down that headliner and spray away. But as Rebel in the previous post said you could get alot more creative with recovering it yourself. Your fabric..your personality!

I was thinking either red or blue, most likely blue. And black crushed velvet does look good! I will consider that.
