how to change a shift knob

Shifter knob

Postby garysierra [OP] » Feb 01 2012, 9:28am

Just wondering, how would I go about changing my shift knob? It's on my '90 sierra, there isn't a way to twist it off or anything, i have the same interior as the attached picture. Thanks in advance!

Just PULL hard. Its glued on and is splined so it won't turn. I would heat it up with a hair dryer first. My advice, if its on leave it. Years ago my uncle had an 88 and his came off and could never get it to stay on again. He attempted to epoxy an after market one on there but it only lasted a month or two. Just my opinion.

Thanks! I don't think It's glued on, or if it is, the glue is gone haha. It twists, but It's like.... I guess the best way to put it is that It's wrapped in the rubbery sh*t that is wrapped around the whole stick.

I could be wrong (It has happened before) but I think it is screwed on. What has happened is the outside has come loose from the part that is screwed to the actual shifter. That's what happened to a Cherokee I had once.

I'm not sure, maybe some close ups? I know It's overdone, but i want an 8 ball haha. In the last two pictures, you can see that It's easy to twist it, maybe I'll just mess around with it when i have the day off on Thursday.

Does the part that has the shift pattern pop off (with maybe a mini screwdriver tip prying it up)? It may have a nut under it holding the whole thing on.

It's got to come off some way, you would thing. Unless you have to take the whole shifter loose from under the boot at the floor.

I'd think so too. I was thinking I may have to take the whole thing out, and if that's the case, It's not really worth it just to replace the knob haha. Thanks for your posts though, I'll check it out on Thursday!
