I have a 2015 Silverado W/T with the 4.2" screen radio with Bluetooth and satellite radio etc. It has no radio controls on the steering wheel and I was just wondering if anyone knew what would be involved in adding them? I.E., is the steering wheel already wired for the controls making it just a matter of buying the panel with the buttons and plugging it up? Or would the wiring have to be run from the radio? Thanks for any info.

Could be plug and play or it could have to be wired but the service department at the dealer would know best. Might as well ask cause id suggest looking for a discount online for the part and letting them install it. If you have a problem with electric down the line they will say you caused the short when you modified the wiring system if you install it yourself.

Just as an update, I had my truck in the dealership for some work on Friday and asked them about adding the steering wheel controls. They informed me that it was not a "plug and play" situation for the k2xx models and that the entire steering wheel would have to be replaced. $250 for the wheel and $120 labor. Luckily for me they "owe me one" (long story) so they are ordering me the steering wheel and will install it all completely free of charge!

Sweet deal! But....you must tell us the story now! Don't leave us hanging! Gotta know what happened!

I'll try to make this the short version. Lol So I was driving a 2013 LT crew cab I had for 1 year. I got an email saying "you're one of our special customers who we can get into a new vehicle for little or no money down and Not much increase in payment". I didn't think much of it but had a free afternoon one Friday so I decided to stop in just to see what the deal was. Well ...... a few hours later I had test driven this 2015. It isn't an LT so it is missing some of the bells and whistles from my 2013, but it's New, and it's Black (the color I really wanted). So we do the deal including the dealership switching over my leveling kit and 20"Fuels/Trail Grapplers. They give me a loaner and tell.me to come back the next day to pick It up. So they call me Saturday morning and tell me it's gonna be Tuesday before it's ready cuz they can't find a key for the Fuels to get the wheels off .......

......... so I am furious, having planned my life for the next few days around getting this truck on saturday. So, they start scrambling when I threaten to ax the whole deal. They call me back a few hours later and tell me they have the leveling kit done but still can't get the wheels off. Immediately I think "how the hell did you do the kit without taking off the wheels!!" then I remember, just a week and a half before I had my old truck in for a oil change/tire rotation. So I ask then how they rotated the tiresthen but cant get them off now? Turns out they have been lying about doing tire rotations on my truck for MONTHS. So I am even more furious. So from there basically everyone in the dealership is treating me like I own the place. the finance manager gave me $100 cash to take my girlfriend to dinner while they finished up the new truck (after they finally found one of their salesmen who had my same wheels and used his key, which they let me keep) ........

Like I said, ling story. Lol. ......... so I have my brand new 2015 finally. Immediately the TPMS warning light goes off. 3 weeks later and FOUR trips back to the dealership they finally figured out this past Friday what the issue was. So when the finance manager asked how I was and I told him the rest of this story he didn't know, and he asked if I had gotten my satisfaction survey, to which I told him I had but had NOT filled it out yet, lol he asked what he could do? So I had just found out from the service guy the steering wheel would be $375. So they all got together and agreed to switch out my steering wheel at no charge to me.

I will say, all in all, even after everything that happened, they did bend over backwards to make things right and take care of me. I will give them credit for that. A lot of companies today wouldn't have been willing, at least on the surface, to do the things they did.

Yes. I'm sure getting caught was the main reason. They said it was the actions of one employee who was dealt with. Whether that's true or not, who knows. But they'll think twice about anything like that when I walk.through the doors from now on. And hopefully all their other customers too!

Please let me know how the steering wheel controls work out. I've been considering getting a regular cab WT, but one of the things that annoys me is that you cannot get the steering wheel radio controls. Also, I assume the steering wheel that you are getting is also the leather covered one? If it's as simple as just buying the other part and swapping them, then that would be good to know.

I would only assume the volume radio controls/ cruise controls would work. maybe the bluetooth controls...but as far as being able to scroll through the driver information center and select veh info, phone, navigation, and other opens, I will assume the drivers info center gauge cluster would need to be changed, It will def require a tech2 computer and some GM assistance to make it work, People who have base model cruze's have been doing this for a while cause they dont come with cruise controls, but if you notice on LT models the D.I.C on the cluster is different to say the least on the silverado and sierra work truck models, still to be able to control radio and blue tooth incoming calls will be a upgrade for the better,
as far as the surveys go, working for a gm dealership they are a huge deal, some dealerships more than others, its almost a lottery for the owners of the dealerships to keep the customer happy and coming back, u might be out of warranty so to speak by 15k and tranny goes bad, and are a loyal customer and have a good svc record with your dealer, next thing you know you have a new tranny for a predetermined participation fee, where if you went to ford they would tell you pound dirt so to speak, or for example many other manufacters... The survey is a big big deal where I work. So yes they will treat you like a king everytime you come in to keep you happy but dont take it for granted. just build a good repor so to speak with them and keep it lasting. Also give them a good survey once they have met your needs if not let them know before you fill it out and send it in lol. In reality one bad survey can end your career where I work. Its your livelyhood. Its hard to make everyone happy, and sometimes you cant do anything to make that one person happy no matter what. I always tell people though I didnt break it buy it or build it, I just bring bad news and tell you what is wrong and needs fixed....being truthful is always best

:) good luck keep us posted.

Yeah. It is obvious the survey is really important to them. The finance manager has asked me about it multiple times and the salesman told me that if I gave him a great rating on the survey he would fill up my gas tank in return, lol. They have bent over backwards for me, which I appreciate. They did some things wrong, but have done everything they needed to to make them right and that says alot to me. That I appreciate more than just a new steering wheel or anything like that.

I'm pretty sure the higher model regular cab that gives you the steering wheel controls also includes a leather steering wheel as standard. So if they are ordering a completely new steering wheel, I'm guessing it will probably be the leather covered one. On the other hand, if they are just ordering certain parts of the steering wheel to swap them out, then that would be different.

#20 ·
My guess is that they will do a complete swap, or atleast thats what would make sense lol.

It should work, but like I said without different clusters, not all the features the wheel was designed for will be unlocked, but heck if you can get volume controls and blue tooth, and radio station selection out of it, thats a deal. See if they will cut you a parts only on a nice bed liner while your at it, and tinted windows:) lol

The bed liner and tint below. Actually my list of mods is pretty short right now. I'm sure there's probably plenty I could do, but I'm not experienced enough to know about alot of the in depth stuff. New exhaust and getting my bumper cover painted to match the rest of the body are tops on my list right now.

Well. My truck has been at the dealership all day having the new steering wheel installed. I just got a call from the serice manager saying that they have had everyone they could with GM involved and can't get it to work. So. I guess no new steering wheel or radio/bluetooth controls for me. They are washing and detailing the truck and giving me a $300 parts/service credit. Maybe I'll spring for that rear underseat storage box I've been thinking about?
