Aftermarket Radio Wire Harness (2012 Silverado)

Aftermarket Radio Wire Harness (2012 Silverado)

Postby Copeskey45 [OP] » Oct 22 2012, 8:56am

Hey guys, I just bought a 2012 Silverado Crew Cab. I want to put a double-din dvd/radio head unit in. I have asked a couple of different people about the aftermarket wire harness and one person said I need it and the other person said I don't. So my question is, Do I need it or not?

Thanks, Chris!

^true.

I used this one from amazon for my 2011. Works well.
"Pac Rp4-gm31 Radiopro4 Interface (for Select Gm (r) Vehicles With Can Bus)"

MODERATOR NOTE (8 Nov 12):
The RP4 GM31 does not retain OnStar. Users who wish to retain OnStar functionality must order the OS4 version of this harness.

You definitely need it if you don't want to hack your factory wiring. What the harness does is allow you to avoid cutting the factory connector off of your GM harness by connecting to it and then allowing you to splice it into the radio wires. If you did not have the harness, you would have to cut the connector off the end of your factory wiring and then splice it to the radio wiring. Also, if you want the "Retain Accessory Power", OnStar, Door chimes, etc. features of your new truck, you need to have the appropriate harness installed which is manufactured by several aftermarket companies such as PAC, Metra, or others.

Not sure. I just copied what crutchfield.com told me I needed, then searched for the product number in amazon.
The above post is a direct quote from the product name in amazon.

I'd suggest building a shopping cart at crutchfield to identify exactly what you need.

Just curious, what HU are you looking at?

Have you read my sales pitch for the Pioneer Avic Z140BH?

I already have a Kenwood DNX7100 dvd/nav/bluetooth/camera/xm that i pulled out of my titan before i traded it in. Im really confused at which harness i need. I want to retain onstar and I dont have steering wheel controls and its a non-bose system. I would rather have the PAC harness thanthe metra as I read many reviews saying the metra has to be reset quite often.
