CB/Marine Radio

CB/Marine Radio

Postby Luke300zx [OP] » Feb 16 2011, 8:38pm

Long story short, I go hunting around here in California once in a while and I want to get a marine radio put into my truck. I was going to use a CB but the marine radio's work much better because they're so much more powerful. There were a few CB's that would fit perfectly in the center console area below the radio and above the cup holders but I haven't found any marine radios that will work (most marine radios ive found are round and ugly, not rectangular and awesome).

So is there anyone out there who has a marine radio in their truck? If so what kind and where did you end up putting it?

Yeah. If you think about it. CB's are meant to go a few miles or so. Marine radios are meant to go over greater distances (how often is another boat close by in the middle of the sea) where as CB's (how often do you see 2 18 wheelers within a few miles?). The only reason the Marine is better for hunting is because it's not like a open road. There's a bunch of trees and shit that interfere with the signal. I tried a CB up there once and someone at a hill maybe 100 yards away from me couldnt hear me at all on the CB.

True. You can soup up a cb though and get hella range out of em. CB shop here does crazy shit with em but no clue how far they get out. Good luck with it though.

Not so sure about how you intend to use a marine radio. They bounce off of other antenna's much like CB's do and that depends on the antenna size your using. Even a hand held marine radio is only good for a few miles. You'll also be on different frequencies. Unless someone else had one who are you going to talk to in the woods? We have them in are vehilces but they talk our water units.

Anyway, if your hard press to put one in, what brands have you looked at? I've always been a fan of ICOM myself, bu they're a bit spendy. Standards aren't bad but I'd stay way from Apelco's.

Just don't hit the distress button and expect the Coast Guard to start combing the woods for you!!! :D

If your on the water hunting might be ok, if your on land then illegal to use marine radio. Might want to go to GMRS radios.

I may of missed something in the reading, but you can put one in your truck leagaly because no one would know the difference between you and a boat. You would just need a call name. However, there is a significant difference in lingo used on marine radios than CB's and previous my questions still remains; Who would you communicate with if your not communicating with other boats? VHF and CB frequencies don't cross.

I'd be talking to the other hunters (My Grandpa, Uncle, Cousin, etc). They all use marine radios because with the terrain we're in CB's don't work really much at all, or if they do (even with big antennas) they only work for so far. During bear hunting sometimes we have to be 3+ miles apart to try and locate our dogs after we let them loose and with thousands of hills, trees, and other terrain it makes it hard with a CB.

I haven't looked at any brands yet really. I was looking at Cobra CB's but i'm not sure what some good brands are for marine radios. With a CB you have set channels, 1, 2, 3, etc where anyone can set it to "scan" and find you talking. This sucks while bear hunting because there are certain people out there who hear your dogs and try and get to the bear before you can so they listen in on your conversations. Where as with the marine radio we can have custom set frequencies instead of what the radio comes with and no one else uses marine radios up there so we dont have to worry about people interfering as much.

I live in Alaksa and is very familiar with Marine Radio's as I do a lot of Commercial Fishing. The best radio i trust out on the open Ocean is Uniden. I'll tell a Quick story. We were out 120 miles from St. Paul Island in a 52' Longliner (Halibut). It got shitty fast. Must have been blowing 50Knts with 20' seas. We lost out big radio (Single Sideband), Radar, and hydrolics. So we hobbled back to the island and about 90 miles out (4 hours later), we got in touch with public saftey. Told them our situation about loosing Hydrolics and might need a tow. But Fortunatly we made it back ok. Docking the Vessel was the hard part... lol

marine radios and cbs are different frequency's. you cant talk to a marine radio with a cb and vise versa. Marine radios put out a higher wattage then legal cbs. get the radio peaked and tuned, have the proper antenna and you can talk to other states.
