Replacement Factory Door Speakers

Factory Speakers

Postby codysown [OP] » Mar 05 2012, 6:25am

I have had a project in the back of my mind to do for awhile now and it was replacing the factory door speakers, Rear and Front. I knew the factory speakers were crappy paper cones and they sounded absolutely horrible, so I have been wanting to do this since I got the vehicle back in September.

I replaced the rears with 5.25 Infiniti Kappas and was floored at the difference they made. The originals I had unplugged months ago because the rattled so bad it was annoying. The Fronts got replaced with some nice Pioneer 6.5 3 ways that were sitting in a box waiting to go into my Jeep. After doing the rears I couldn't resist doing the fronts. The difference is incredible. I was going to replace the Head unit because it all sounded like major crap, however after changing out the speakers, I am going to save my money for other things, like tires Running boards, and more important things.

I do have a 12" Alpine sub to help with the lowend of things, it's not the loudest but it makes its presence known and does what I want it to do. I fully suggest anyone with factory speakers to change them out as the sound quality difference is unreal.

A big thanks to member Fishersfort for the how-to article. I got the basic idea from him and then put my own touches to it with the dremel.

Thanks for the info, I'm thinking of doing the same thing. As for the sub, where did you put it, and what did you wire it to? (I've never done speaker before).

5 1/4 will fit in the rear doors of an extended cab. 6.5s in the front doors. Thats what I have in mine. I do not know if you will need the speaker adapter to fit the 6 3/4 in your fronts. I chopped up the stock speaker frame like in the how-to, with a few variations and the 6.5s fit nice. Last I checked the adapter plates were $30 a set and that is $60 I saved by chpping up the factory's that I would of thrown away anyway.

As far as my sub, I tied the speaker level inputs direct to my amp, (has a high Input), from the drivers side speaker wires that run down the door sill. I just spliced right into them, I need to do something different as they are cutting out, dont seem to be getting good contact. This will be a future project, maybe this weekend. As far as power, I ran a 8 gauge power wire to the battery and a 8 gauge negative to the seat bracket. The remote turn on is coming of the the PW disable switch wire that runs down the drivers side. This works decent as I never use the switch anyway. When the kid gets a little older this may change. Also in the works is a custom made box, I need to find a website that has a box creator so I can find airspace and get the right "tune" to it. Right now its a 12" Alpine in a way too small under rear fold down box.

If anyone knows of a free Sub Box builder site please throw out the link.
