Painting over back up sensors.....

Postby ArcticWarrior [OP] » Mar 20 2012, 6:36am

I have a chrome rear bumper with back up sensors and was wondering if anyone knows if painting over them w/ black spray paint will effect the ability for the sensors to operate correctly? I plan on plasti-dipping the chrome and spraying the sensors w/black gloss(no dip). anyone have any guidance/suggestions?

I was thinking of doing the same thing this weekend, if you're not in a hurry I'll do mine and let you know if it affects the sensor operation. I was also thinking about buying two of the black sensors like the 2 that are already on the truck next to the license plate. I haven't priced any out yet but I doubt they are that expensive and I bet they would work.

I was asking the exact same question in shop talk. I haven't been able to find the replacement sensor caps online yet. Lemme know if you find some.

No real honest answer as to whether or not they will work properly, as it depends if the sensor is designed with a minimum trigger distance. Paint will obviously be a solid object and will trigger a proximity sensor if it is tuned to detect up to the face of the sensor.

As far as OEM replacement sensors being not that expensive - I can see this being the type of part that gets outrageously overpriced for no reason. Sure an industrial sensor of this kind is $50-100, but because this has a very specific application they'll probably charge $100s. I'm interested to know what you find.

OEM Part # 19116085
$121.26 per sensor. Two matte black sensors to replace your chrome set of 2 = $242.52 + $61.84 shipping = total cost of 304.36...ouch!

Yep, pretty outrageous pricing...I am wondering if you could just paint the outside circle of the sensor. The only part of the sensor that is electronic is the inner ring. At least that would dilute the chrome a little bit.

Hate to say I told you so.....and gmpartsdirect is usually pretty competitive if not lower than others. Are there any non-OEM aftermarket parts out there? If the OEM specifications are available you could probably search for a matching sensor that would work with the same setup.

Might be a pain, but maybe post up for trade. You never know you might find someone to swap out if they are looking for the chrome.
